📢 A timely reminder for those that might be dealing with any new government partners today... Public affairs / lobbying ain't difficult if you do it right. At it's core, you need to remember who your primary audience is (who can affect change and what they need) and your secondary audiences (who will be your ally in influencing the primary audience). Then you need to: 📊 Build trust & relationships based on robust analysis   🌟 Offer solutions that: - are credible - are commercially, legally, politically watertight - have identified benefits to key stakeholders (consumers, customers, voters etc)   🤝 Look for allies: esp. those with shared/overlapping interests who are beyond your sector, across borders across politics   👨👩👦👦 Build a good team   Finally... remember the winning arguments are almost always built on economic arguments. Easy, really....

From Newsroom to Global Impact-Navigating International Political Discourse As an American political commentator in Kenya's media landscape, I turned complex international political dynamics into compelling narratives that drove significant increase in audience engagement. During pivotal moments in U.S. politics, like the 2016 presidential election, I brought unique cross-cultural perspectives to East African audiences, breaking down intricate political scenarios into clear, impactful insights that resonated across borders. Breaking into international political commentary required more than just understanding politics – it demanded an ability to translate cultural nuances for different audiences. When major U.S. political events unfolded, I crafted narratives that bridged the gap between American political intricacies and East African perspectives. This approach transformed complex global issues into relevant, engaging discussions for local audiences. Media commentary at this level isn't just about analyzing events; it's about strategic storytelling that connects with diverse audiences. I developed a signature style that combined data-driven insights with cultural understanding, leading to regular appearances on premier networks. My ability to contextualize American politics for African audiences resulted in a 60% increase in viewer engagement during key political coverage. Strategic communications in today's global landscape requires more than traditional messaging – it demands the ability to navigate cultural complexities while maintaining authenticity and impact. By focusing on clear, culturally relevant analysis, I elevated political discourse while making it accessible to diverse international audiences.

🗳 New Study: The Political Impact of Communication Channels 📣 Today, the competition between parties takes place simultaneously on several channels with different characteristics. In a recently published study, WZB researcher Christoph Ivanusch found that political parties send different signals in different places. This depends on the nature and characteristics of the channels and means of communication. 🛠 Ivanusch used the language model BERT to examine 41,000 parliamentary speeches, 34,000 press releases, around 72,000 tweets from party accounts, and more than 420,000 tweets from individual party members in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland between January 2019 and September 2021. 📌 The results illustrate the complexity of party competition in modern media environments. They show that multiple political agendas exist in parallel and can even originate from the same actor. Different social groups have different preferences. Excited to share an update from our "Immersive Week on Pre-Election Political Communications"! After our visit to the Commission on Monday, I began to wonder: - What are the challenges the Council faces in communicating its work to the public? - How does the European Council develop its content strategy to effectively communicate with diverse audiences across different channels? - Are there specific reasons why the Council may choose to avoid certain social media platforms, unlike the German government? Yesterday, I visited the Council of the European Union and dived into these questions with their communications department. One of the key topics we explored was the challenge of distilling nuanced policy and procedural matters into digestible, entertaining content while maintaining accuracy and relevance. It's a delicate balance, but crucial for fostering understanding among young people. We also discussed the role of social media platforms in EU communications. While platforms like TikTok have immense reach, there are understandable hesitations about using such spaces due to data security concerns. Reason # 2️⃣: ☑️ It allowed me to gain firsthand insight into the world of news media. In today’s world, it seems the principle is clear: it doesn’t matter how impactful your work is if no one knows about it. A well-curated presence in the information space is essential both for public institutions and private companies, and even individuals on social media understand this. Navigating the media landscape is a challenge that requires a solid understanding of its rules and respecting them no matter what. In my role, I worked closely with correspondents in Brussels and maintained relationships with reporters covering specific topics in depth. This included coordinating media appearances for visiting VIPs—ministers, state secretaries, even the prime minister—who were conveying the message on the record. At the same time, I frequently provided background information to field reporters off the record, ensuring they had the broader context to accurately cover a story. This required me to be aware of the current political climate and to understand what should be communicated publicly, and what should be withheld for the sake of negotiations. An important aspect of my job was balancing transparency with discretion. It wasn’t just about the interests of Poland or the member states we collaborated with; it was also about ensuring the safety of our experts and safeguarding the communication strategies of VIPs. Every media statement was crafted with the wider EU audience in mind, considering both the need for public information and political strategy. 💡 One of the most significant lessons I took from this role is that strategic cooperation with the media can serve as an incredibly powerful tool in political negotiations.

Brilliant article by Esenam Agubretu [linked in comments] 👉 MPs, ministers, and government departments are becoming increasingly active on LinkedIn 👉 With 1 billion users, LinkedIn already has a significant amount of attention, making it an strong platform for communications and engagement 👉 Public affairs professionals are using LinkedIn to show their expertise, which is helping them engage with policymakers 💡In my view, the lack of anonymity on the platform reduces “trolling”, which makes it a strong place to deliver messages. LinkedIn also allows people to “opt out” of political posts, which means people can have a choice in what they see. What do you think?
