Here’s an unexpected fact: Educational Alliance manages a bee hive. And here’s an unexpected reason: to change lives. At Educational Alliance, we run afterschool and summer programs for over 800 children in lower Manhattan. These students attend public schools that often lack ample resources for enrichment. Additionally, many of the children are dealing with tough situations at home: some live in shelters, others are undocumented, and quite a few need more educational support than their schools can provide. The bee hive that our students maintain is just one example of how we expose them to experiences that are unusual, intriguing, and educational. There’s a long list of what else they experience in our programs: trips to colleges, tutoring, homework help, visits to museums, music instruction, hands-on science, and much more. The history of the Lower East Side is filled with stories of immigrants who came to this country and a spark was ignited that allowed them to flourish and to excel. They became entrepreneurs, scientists, and civic leaders. Educational Alliance was at the center of many of those stories. We’re still here doing that same work throughout lower Manhattan, helping kids to discover all the potential that lies within themselves. A few weeks ago, Educational Alliance learned that we had been awarded a five-year grant from New York State to make our afterschool programs even stronger and more enriching. In the video below - in which I interview Shawnia White, the Senior Director of Programs for our afterschool and summer programs - we discuss what we do and what this grant will mean for the hundreds of children and families that we serve here in Lower Manhattan. #nyc #education #nycschools #bees

#LifeUpdate: I am excited to share that this week I started a new position at Black River United Way as their Director of Community Engagement. I will be working to mobilize partners and support for BRUW’s efforts to ensure childhood success and disaster resiliency in Georgetown and Williamsburg Counties. It’s been incredible so far, and I’m thrilled to have another opportunity to make a difference through my career and even more so, in the community I call home. Georgetown is pretty special to me - it’s where my husband and I got married (city) and Georgetown County is where we chose to live and buy a home a together. I am really looking forward to having a front row seat to some much-needed work in my this area (such as kindergarten readiness and early-grade reading initiatives) and can’t wait to share more about the amazing work that Black River United Way does to help children and families in Georgetown (and Williamsburg!) thrive. For now, I am so grateful for all of the support and encouragement that has helped me begin this new chapter (Thank you! - You know who you are!). “You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.” – C.S. Lewis On to new goals and new dreams in 2024! PS - Did you know that less than half of students in Georgetown & Williamsburg Counties are currently reading at grade-level? Or that 88% of students who failed to earn a high school diploma were struggling readers in third grade? I was shocked when I heard these statistics! These are facts that that BRUW is working to change.

Afterschool, vacation, and summer programs were key beneficiaries of federal stimulus dollars. But the expiration of ESSER funds means these types of programs may be first on the chopping block for district spending. In a new op-ed, Emma Banay, manager of the Inspired Minds portfolio, points to the important role high-quality out-of-school-time programs play in children's holistic development. “What’s really special about them isn’t just the opportunity to improve academic skills. It’s that they are — simply put — fun.” Programs from grantees including FIRST, DiscoverE, Learn Fresh, National Inventors Hall of Fame, and National 4-H Council provide academic benefits while also supporting children’s social-emotional development, such as improved interpersonal skills and stronger peer-to-peer and peer-to-adult relationships. That makes them particularly important now. Read more in The 74 Media.

Yesterday I visited my old school for its 90th anniversary. It was a walk down memory lane – but it also gave me a lot to think about. I brought my kids to show them the classrooms and beautiful grounds that had such a big impact on me. The school has certainly expanded with more classrooms and improved resources, but there was one surprising change: the number of students. When I was a student, we had around 180 students per year, but now there are only about 90 in each new year. This info was given by the lovely Year 9 students who toured us around, they explained that many families choose private schools. My 13-year-old, who attends an overcrowded public school with limited space and resources – on grounds probably a quarter of the size – was amazed at the difference. They couldn’t believe how such a well-equipped school could have shrinking enrolments while their own school struggles to provide space for everyone to sit. It’s funny – you talk to adults about this, and we find ways to rationalise or explain these disparities, intake needs and random metrics. But kids? They just know. They instinctively see that something’s not right. During the event, the Executive Director called this school a “jewel” in the in her region. I don’t disagree – I loved my time there. But should we have “jewels” in public education? Shouldn’t every school be a gem, offering an equal opportunity to thrive? We shouldn’t accept inequity as business as usual. The proliferation of the good/school bad school narratives need to stop. The policies, the systems, and the choices of parents who’ve lost trust in local public schools – these are the things that disappoint me. But these kids in talking compared their pubic schools, instinctively knowing something isn’t right, they inspire me. How can we create more schools where kids maintain their clear sense of social responsibility, and not break it down as they grow up? My old Art room hadn't changed, the 'beautiful' fluorescent lighting. Many memories of lunchtimes and the freedom and trust to continue work beyond the timetabled period. #EducationEquity #PublicSchools #SocialResponsibility #FutureLeaders #EducationPolicy

📊 Last year, we implemented five major literacy initiatives and, after assessing the effectiveness of our programs, we're ensuring we put our resources toward scalable and sustainable initiatives that will have the greatest impact: Family Reads Program: ✅ Scale As a result of Family Reads’ success, we are not only continuing to support students at Soddy Elementary School but have also scaled the program to Calvin Donaldson, East Lake, and Woodmore Elementary Schools. Literacy First Tutoring Model: ✅ Scale The Literacy First Model's personalized approach and consistent progress monitoring have been key to building students' confidence and literacy skills. The program has now been scaled to 12 elementary schools in Hamilton County and will impact at least 500 children this year. Out-of-School Time K-2 Literacy Toolkit: ✅ Scale The OST K-2 Literacy Toolkit is designed to “right size” literacy supports for afterschool programs. After a successful pilot in the spring with two OST providers, the program is now being scaled to four providers this year. The Image of the Child in Early Education In early childhood education, the way we view children affects how we teach and care for them. Here's how we think about children in Ontario's early years education: ➡ Children are seen as smart, capable, and full of potential. ➡ They actively take part in their learning and development instead of just being taught. ➡ Every child is unique, with their strengths, interests, and ways of seeing the world. ➡ Children help build knowledge, think deeply, and solve problems. ➡ They grow and learn at their own pace, shaped by their families, communities, and cultures. This view means that we respect children's rights, celebrate their differences, and recognize their ability to shape their learning. Educators create spaces and experiences that encourage curiosity, independence, and growth in all areas of a child's development. By seeing children as capable and smart, educators work alongside them, designing learning environments and activities that support their natural learning abilities and make education a shared journey.

Picture a landscape where children are not bound by zip codes or economic circumstances, but instead, have access to schools that nurture their talents and aspirations. When parents have the freedom to explore a spectrum of educational options—from traditional public schools to charter schools, private institutions, and homeschooling—they become active participants in their child's educational journey, fostering a sense of ownership and investment in their academic success. Critics may argue that expanding school choice undermines the stability and viability of traditional public schools. However, Governor Doug Ducey's vision transcends the false dichotomy of choice versus public education. Rather than viewing choice as a threat, it should be regarded as a catalyst for positive transformation within our educational systems. What are your thoughts on power of choice when it comes to determining where your student may go to school? Check out our new episode airing tomorrow featuring Governor Doug Ducey to learn more! #BetterLearning #BeTheChange #RadicallyStudentCentered Doug Ducey, Kevin Stoller, A4LE-Association for Learning Environments, Second Class Foundation, Kay-Twelve, Education Leaders' Organization, Phoenix,Arizona

We’re left with some big questions as we’ve entered a new school year. What changes do we need to see in education? How do we close the gap between where we are now and where we need to be? And most importantly, how do we build schools that truly get our kids https://lnkd.in/gpnRgWeS
