Why is everyone only trying to hire PMs with the same domain/industry background? It is so weird. Where does the diversity come from then? PMs are the nucleus of the product. They are the most creative folks around. If you simply keep hiring folks from the same domain, everyone will deal with problems in the same way. Companies will keep getting stuck with same solutions with zero differentiation. 👀 In this AI tech era, are we really looking for innovation with diverse views on the table or it is still the same rat race to get shit done with stereotypical results? 🤔 #pmhiring #pmbestpractises #productinnovation

Because it makes it easy to interview and resonate with. Some companies don’t hire for innovation only, they try to find it in someone who belongs to the frustration, understands the dent, and can repair it from the first day. Where as other companies looking for open minded PM’s are majorly startup’s or established firms trying to do something new. Big reason is ‘Risk’. Diversified portfolio companies have huge risk of - Retained Masses using services hence process, hence mindset, hence legacy. But your POV at some boundaries is absolutely fine - Companies should hire a PM - Unbiased being the nucleus of the product. Hope this perspective answer your problem not a debate 😉.

For the last two months, I have been attempting to apply for remote Product Manager roles with salaries exceeding 100K USD per year. What I've observed is: - The hiring process is automated up to the 5th stage, and only in the final round you engage in a conversation with a real person. - The hiring companies are well aware that you use generative AI tools to formulate answers or generate workshop content, and they assess your proficiency in using these tools. In some cases, they ask you to send them screenshots of your interaction with GenAI. Strive to become proficient in them as soon as possible. #generativeai #careergrowth

Today, I got a chance to observe a PM interview that a Startup Founder friend asked me to sit in (fly-on-the-wall). The candidate was a feature PM with 3-4 yrs of experience building B2B SaaS - that had recently shut down. Here's how it mostly went... --- Founder: What was your typical day at work at the previous company? PM: They asked me to write feature specs. F: How did you go about it? PM: I used PRD templates from Aakash Gupta, the Product Growth Guy. Usually I research about the feature on Google, do some market research on competitors and typically build a spec in 3-4 days. F: Did you copy their product? PM: No, I took inspiration from them. I worked with the UX designer to change and restructure the UX so it doesn't look copied. F: And then? PM: I share it with the engineering team. Wait for comments and get a new revision F: Did you talk to prospects/customers? PM: No. My boss would typically do that. F: Ok, what happens next? PM: I wait for the engineering team to build the product. While I wait, I write another spec. This time I'm using templates from Reforge. I'm also trying out ChatPRD. F: How can you tell if the product met the needs of the customer? PM: No, not my job. QA team would test the feature. And when released Customer Success (CSM) team will receive feedback from Customers. --- Founder asked me for feedback on the interview process. What should i tell him? 😎 #HiringPM
