Block it up! 🥎 Lilly is eleven. She plays with a talented 12u travel team out of Birmingham. But, because there’s a gap in catching talent within the high school years—she is working with the Varsity pitchers already. Unless a catcher comes along in the next couple years, she will be playing varsity in middle school. Which is an insanely courageous thing, in my opinion. She’s been used to seeing low to mid fifties (which is fast for her age group)—but those high schoolers are throwing mid to upper sixties. And they are twice her size. 💪🏻 You see, not many want to catch. It’s dirty. Tiring. Tough on your knees. And you have to be the quarterback. Commanding the field. A leader. A cheerleader for your pitcher. You see the whole game. Back turned to the stands. A director. And the ball—comes in hot. With spin. Curve. Drop. Change up. A bat swinging in your eyes. And you have to snag it—or block. Quickly. With your whole body. Head down. Nose to the ball. Blocking is hard work. So it is with life. We can take our eye off the ball for one minute, and life can pass us by. We can pay attention to the audience, and we won’t be in the game for long. We can be lazy or sloppy, and the other team will trample us. Or we can focus. Nose to the ball. Blocking the plate. Owning the box. And saving run after run. Winning! It’s hard work. Few want that responsibility. Few can handle that pressure. Will you? Block it up? 💪🏻
