One of the most consequential mistakes a service member can make is to waive their rights and give a statement to a military investigator. The western approach to investigations has investigators start with a theory. They then gather facts to prove their theory. This approach is flawed because it is unlikely to produce exculpatory information ( One because officers aren't looking for it, and two, even if they accidentally find it, to recognize it they'd have to first consider the possibility that they were wrong when they created their theory. Investigators are generally reluctant to question their intuition.). The more serious the crime, the more pronounced this prejudice will manifest in the investigation, and the greater the chances that you will be treated unfairly. If you are being advised of your rights, you are at the center of the theory. They already believe you are guilty. There is nothing you can say to change their minds. Once you waive and start talking, they are legally permitted to lie and manipulate you to keep you talking. At that point, your BEST CASE scenario is that they ignore everything you say. They will first comb through everything you did say and twist it to fit the theory. NEVER WAIVE YOUR RIGHTS before speaking with an attorney. EVER. Tell your kids. Tell your family. The more an individual has to lose, the less likely they are to destroy their life with bad decisions, like violence and theft. As the number of individuals that have less to lose increases, so does violence and destruction of that society. The more have loved ones, families, children, goals, inexpensive pastimes and things they enjoy, affordable clothing and food and other things that impact well being, the more they have to lose. It’s a sliding scale that can be tracked rather easily by anyone, in our times or past nations and civilizations. What’s required to keep the masses from acting out when they have less to lose, is an overbearing government, controlling you. The issue is that this control doesn’t last forever and eventually everything ends up in ruin, because 99% have nothing to lose. Nov. 5th.
