https://lnkd.in/g-eUCBuw US Navy SEAL, Jocko Willink provides an intense speech about how mistakes made in the fog-of-war have lessons to teach. I just finished Jocko's book, Extreme Ownership. It is an excellent book that I wished had been written years ago, and has a collection of leadership concepts that have been around for a long time. The last 4 years of my 21 in the Navy was at a command that had the worst organizational culture of any organization that I have experienced. However, a shining example of a course-change in organizational culture that occurred at an all-Pilot/all-Flight Engineer meeting. My Commanding Officer spoke to one of the (enlisted) Flight Engineers, looked him in the eye and addressed him by his name and rank and said, "... about what we were talking about the other day, you were right, I was wrong." I do not remember what it was about if it was even mentioned. What struck me, was that the senior officer in the command admitted in-front of his junior officers and a bunch of enlisted sailors that he was wrong about something, when he didn't have to. He clearly took ownership! I don't know the back-story. I don't need to know the back-story. What I remember was how it suddenly instilled trust in me. I knew at that moment, that I could trust him. He might not always be right, but trust is not dependent upon always being right and not making mistakes. Trust is about your character. Jocko drives this point home throughout his book and has cool stories to illustrate the point. My Skipper already knew the concept of ‘Extreme Ownership’. These principles were known decades ago in the principle of "Pass the credit, take the blame" (as I first heard it). Watch the video, but truly, I recommend: Read the book! Highly recommend the booksExtreme Ownership & the follow up book The Dichotomy of Leadership.
The #ExtremeOwnership principles don't depend on your personality traits. You could be shy or extroverted, cerebral or enthusiastic, conventional or creative. No matter your inclinations, you can still build good relationships, keep things simple, think strategically, and stay humble. But the opposite is also true. If you let your ego dictate your leadership, you will lose in the long run - no matter how smart, charismatic, or determined you are. https://lnkd.in/gAm95RNE

"Leadership Lessons from General Horrocks: Wit Under Fire" One of the most unforgettable moments in A Bridge Too Far (1977) is General Horrocks’ rousing pre-battle speech. With a wry smile, he quips about "tea at Arnhem" while outlining an operation fraught with peril. His humor lightens the mood, but his words carry a serious undertone—he understands the stakes and the need to inspire unwavering resolve. What makes his speech so striking is its blend of humanity and leadership. Horrocks doesn’t just issue commands; he connects with his troops, uniting them with candor and calm under pressure. In today’s fast-paced world, leaders could take a page from Horrocks’ playbook: a touch of humour to disarm tension, clarity of vision to inspire confidence, and a steady hand in uncertain times. After all, true leadership is about lifting others, no matter how daunting the mission ahead

Robert Longhi reflects on the essence of leadership, sharing Col Tim Collins’ powerful speech from the Iraq war. His emphasis on integrity and compassion is a reminder of the traits needed to lead in any field. As an agency owner working with solar companies, I know how important these qualities are in driving teams forward Robert Longhi! Let’s connect and talk leadership and sustainability!
What makes a leader? Difficult question. A good leader should have integrity, self-awareness, courage, respect, compassion, resilience and of course should lead by example. They must be excellent in communicating their vision. Personally I have always thought that some leadership qualities are innate and you cannot create leaders from persons who do not have at least the basic building blocks. Below is the famous speech of Colonel Tim Collins during the War in Iraq n.2. This man is addressing his troops knowing that some will not return. He speaks to his troops of respect towards the Iraqi people and compassion towards the defeated but also of the brutal pursuit of the objective. This man is a leader.

Here's a key takeaway to boost your career: 💯 "If it’s not 100% correct, do it again." Whether you're working on a certain skill or completing a project, this principle underscores the importance of high standards and continuous improvement. It’s not about perfection. It’s about consistency and dedication; the willingness to not give up until it’s at the desired level. Set clear, measurable goals, and don't hesitate to repeat tasks until they meet your standards. This builds a foundation of discipline and excellence that transcends any field. In our latest blog, we explored how military training principles can transform drumming practice—and these insights are just as powerful for your professional life. Being decisive is a skill. Being decisive offers it's rewards. As my favorite Silicon Valley philosopher Naval Ravikant puts it, "Embrace accountability and take business risks under your own name. Society will reward you with responsibility, equity, and leverage." Leif Babin, co-author of "Extreme Ownership" breaks it down into 3 steps below. Embrace uncertainty - The only constant is change Detach - It's the analogy of the person watching the game vs being in the game. When you're in it, you may be too close to the action to see the receiver who's wide open the way the person sitting on the couch with the view of the whole field can see it. Use Iterative Decision Making - Think of it like driving to a new place with GPS. You don’t know every turn ahead, but you follow directions step by step. If you miss a turn, the GPS recalculates and adjusts your route. Each move gets you closer to your destination, even if the path changes along the way. Make progress while staying flexible. The video is 5 minutes and is worth the watch. #leadership #accountability https://lnkd.in/eVS4__kG
