The North Coast Positions Egypt as a Major Economic and Tourism Power By Khaled Selim, Real Estate Expert The North Coast, stretching along Egypt’s Mediterranean shoreline, is witnessing an unprecedented boom in development and investment. With the launch of New Alamein City, the focus has shifted toward transforming the North Coast into a year-round destination, positioning it as one of Egypt’s most vital economic and tourism sectors. My personal vision for operating the North Coast for 12 months requires a comprehensive strategy that begins with New Alamein City, a bold project aimed at turning the area into a global city. New Alamein, with its strategic location and rapid development, represents the starting point for transforming the entire North Coast into a year-round tourist destination. The economic impact of developing the North Coast over the next decade is expected to make it one of the world’s top tourist destinations. This development is not just an improvement in infrastructure but a turning point for every investor and for the Egyptian state as a whole. Transforming the North Coast into a sustainable tourist destination will boost the Egyptian economy, positioning Egypt as a major global economic power by 2030. New Alamein City is the starting point for this ambitious journey. With the support of the Egyptian government and initiatives led by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, the city is moving towards achieving a comprehensive future vision. In his speech, President El-Sisi emphasized the importance of developing new cities like Alamein in strengthening the Egyptian economy and attracting foreign investment. The gradual development of the North Coast will extend progressively from New Alamein to Sidi Abdel Rahman, Sidi Heneish, Ras El Hekma, and all the way to Marsa Matrouh. This phased expansion will ensure a balanced distribution of investments and maximize the natural potential of the region. In conclusion, operating the North Coast for 12 months is not only a strategic move to turn the area into a global tourist destination but also a national project that contributes to achieving Egypt's Vision 2030.

“Ancient civilization ruins, tropical weather, stunning nature, and authentic food are just a few of the many attractions that lure travelers to Mexico. Mexico is the most competitive Latin American travel destination based on the last Travel & Tourism Development Index (TTDI), a method that evaluates infrastructure, policies, resources, and enabling conditions for tourism in countries around the world. In 2021, the natural, cultural, and non-leisure features were the best-performing TTCI sub-index for tourism development in the country. For this reason, tourism is a major economic activity in the North American country. Throughout the past decade, the tourism sector was responsible for more than eight percent of the Mexican gross domestic product (GDP), which is the second-largest GDP in Latin America and the Caribbean.”…,

Cultural Commodification: The Dark Side of #Heritage Tourism Heritage tourism, often celebrated for its economic benefits and role in preserving cultural sites, has a darker, less discussed side: cultural commodification. This phenomenon occurs when cultural elements are marketed and sold for tourism, often leading to the erosion of their original meaning and significance. While heritage tourism can foster cross-cultural understanding and provide economic opportunities, the commodification of culture raises significant ethical and sustainability concerns. Heritage tourism, defined as traveling to experience the places, artifacts, and activities that authentically represent the stories and people of the past, has seen substantial growth. According to the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), cultural and heritage tourism account for 40% of all international tourism, with over 1.4 billion international tourist arrivals recorded in 2018. This sector's growth is driven by a globalized world where people seek unique experiences that connect them to history and culture. Cultural commodification refers to the process of transforming cultural goods, traditions, and practices into commodities to be bought, sold, or traded. This often involves simplifying or altering cultural expressions to make them more palatable to tourists, which can strip them of their original context and significance. While commodification can bring economic benefits, it can also lead to cultural degradation and loss of authenticity. The economic impact of heritage tourism is undeniable. It creates jobs, supports local businesses, and generates revenue for communities. For instance, the UNESCO World Heritage Sites contribute significantly to local economies. A study by PricewaterhouseCoopers found that heritage tourism generated $171.4 billion in economic output and supported 1.2 million jobs in the United States alone. However, this economic boon often comes at the cost of cultural integrity. Traditional practices and artifacts may be altered to suit tourist expectations, leading to a superficial understanding of the culture. For example, the Maasai people of Kenya and Tanzania have seen their traditional dances and rituals turned into tourist spectacles, often performed out of context and without the same cultural significance. Indigenous cultures are particularly vulnerable to the negative effects of cultural commodification. These communities often rely on tourism for income but face significant challenges in maintaining control over how their culture is presented. The exploitation of indigenous cultures can lead to cultural erosion, where traditional knowledge and practices are lost or significantly altered.

Here’s my musings on Tourism City. With outbound Filipinos spending twice the amount earned from inbound tourists, it can represent an opportunity to develop a tourism city to capture Filipino (and also foreign) travelers in search of unique and high quality destinations.
