Thank you, Dr. Franz MJ Pfister, MD, MBA , Sebastien Ourselin FREng FMedSci and Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München for the great organization of the AI Radiology Summit 2024 last week in Munich. A truly international event with really great speakers! The audience: a mix of data scientists, radiologists with an affinity for AI, investors and a few operators. It was a rare opportunity to share experiences 💡My takeaways: 🩻 Very many startups that focus on image analysis struggle with the acceptance of AI by radiology operators. Revenues are still quite low and the road to profitability 💰 is long 🩻 Surprisingly few start-ups really understand or want to understand the dynamics of reimbursement. AI helps optimize workflows (faster diagnosis for physicians), but more importantly, it leads to better outcomes (accuracy of diagnosis) and that should be paid for. 🩻 We have a global shortage of radiologists 👩⚕️. In emerging countries, there are up to ten times fewer radiologists per million inhabitants than in Europe, and the need for imaging is increasing. Artificial intelligence can be a real game changer 🩻 Too few start-ups are focusing on true workflow standardization. The entire image acquisition process should be fully standardized, not just parts of it (e.g. sequences) Looking forward to the event in 2025! This week I attended The Drop in Malmö for the first time. I found it to be a truly one-of-a-kind event, and everything I heard about it before probably didn’t do it justice. Kudos to Hampus Jakobsson and Joel Larsson for this amazing couple of days, you created something unique indeed! I particularly engaged with a topic very close to my heart: how we can finally move into the acceleration phase of the #BioEconomy. I attended a brilliant session by Max Mundt & Christian Gonzalez, PhD on this. Max's post this morning provided an excellent perspective on the differences between pioneering bio𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘥𝘶𝘤𝘵𝘴 and bio𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘤𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘴 (https://lnkd.in/dXBBaHkZ), complementing the discussions from the session. 💡 Here are my key takeaways: 🥇 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝗮 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆—a bioeconomy poster child—that makes the benefits and potential clear to everyone. This, for me, is where the tipping point begins. 📉 𝗔𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁-𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲. It won’t be solved by one startup alone, but rather through the alignment of many interconnected pieces. An interdisciplinary mindset and collaboration at the core of this new generation of startups will be essential. 🎭 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗵𝗼𝘁𝗼𝗺𝘆 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗹𝗼𝘄-𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲/𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵-𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵-𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲/𝗹𝗼𝘄-𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗺𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴. There are more parameters to consider, and a continuum exists where industries like Beauty & Personal Care can move from kilos to tons. Partnering with the right industry will be key to this journey. Looking at you Rushad Nanavatty. All in all, the event had incredible content, people, and conversations. One keynote title and one session particularly stood out for me: Chido Govera led a beautiful session on her foundation,The Future of Hope Foundation. I love what they’re doing to support and mentor vulnerable members of society through entrepreneurship. When I left, I couldn’t stop thinking about the phrase 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘍𝘶𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘏𝘰𝘱𝘦 itself—about our role in creating a vision of the future, one where we all can project and see ourselves thriving. At the end of the day, all this discussion about tools, science, technology and frameworks should not overshadow the "𝘸𝘩𝘺" behind our efforts. #TheDrop #BioEconomy

Exposure During Life Science Nation's "RESI South" in Atlanta, March 25-27, startups will participate in 1-1 partnering meetings, and have the option to upgrade to pitch in-person in the Innovator's Pitch Challenge (IPC) on March 25th. Each early-stage life science startup gets 4-minutes to pitch with slides followed by 9-minutes of Q&A from investor judges. All startup materials will be sent to investor judges beforehand. We were present at AGSTAR! ✋ The Yield Lab team once again witnessed all the alliances and networks that are built in spaces such as #Agstar, a meeting held in Bogotá that is committed year after year to providing a space for the exchange of knowledge, conversations and networking between key players in the agri-food system. This year's meeting also offered a valuable opportunity for the winning StartUps of the #AGSTAR contest to present their pitches to prominent investors in the sector.
