Craig Thomas makes a great point that following standards allows a network operator to maximize the value of their build. From a historical perspective, the lack of standardization was a huge loss for mom-and-pop cable operators when they decided to sell their networks. Simply networks had to be rebuilt and back-office systems redesigned to match the acquiring company's way of doing business. As such, these operators were mostly bought for the customer relationships and not the value of the network. With a standards approach, an operator will be valued on the relationships AND their network.
