As a parent, choosing between testing and intervention can be tough — especially with the costs involved. Here’s a quick guide to help: (1) When to Choose Intervention: Your child’s struggles are clear and need immediate attention. For example, if your child is struggling with anxiety, starting therapy for anxiety right away can provide the help they need sooner and be a better investment of time, energy, and resources. (2) When to Choose Testing: Testing, on the other hand, is essential when you need an assessment for diagnosis and/or advocacy purposes. If you need diagnostic clarity on a condition such as dyslexia, want evidence to support an IEP assessment through the school, or are applying for testing accommodations, a thorough assessment will be necessary. Not sure which is right for your child? Schedule a consult call with us at The Bylund Clinic to discuss what’s best before booking.

Dyslexia diagnosis varies significantly across regions, creating challenges for consistent intervention. Research shows that early identification and evidence-based approaches like Response to Intervention (RTI) can dramatically improve outcomes for students with dyslexia. However, methods like the IQ-achievement discrepancy and Psychological Processing Strengths and Weaknesses (PSW) models fall short of accurately identifying needs. Elham highlights the need for global, standardized guidelines to ensure every child receives timely, effective support. Collaboration between educators, parents, and policymakers is key to driving better outcomes.
