Perfect timing for my second blog to be released, as today is the day that Ontario Regulation 41/24 under the #ConservationAuthoritiesAct comes into effect! Within this blog we explore the updated definition to watercourses. This is a topic that has come up on several of my projects and I believe that the refinements to the definition will provide additional clarity when determining if a drainage feature is a watercourse or a headwater drainage feature. It was also important for me to note that just because a drainage feature doesn’t meet this new watercourse definition, it does not mean that this feature can be removed without management. Rather, it would still need to be managed in accordance with the HDF Guideline. Stay tuned for Sean Male’s blog where he takes a further dive into the Regulation with respect to setback requirements and limits on the conditions Conservation Authorities can attach to permits. #environmentalpermitting #regulatorychanges #environmentalconsulting
As of today, Ontario’s Conservation Authorities Act features an official updated definition of “watercourse”. In her second blog in a series, #TeamGEI’s Olivia Robinson explores this change and its potential implications on environmental projects around the province. Today is World Environment Day. Our natural environment is and will always be a crucial aspect of public policy. It intersects with various aspects of our society, including economics, health, and social justice. The FEU Public Policy Center (FPPC) recognizes the importance of environmental issues in policy-making and public discourse. Environmental conservation and stewardship can only happen through active citizenship, one of our key advocacies in the FPPC.

The jarring truth is that negative impacts of environmental damage disproportionately affect members of the BIPOC community. From environmental hazards consistently showing up closer to BIPOC homes and communities to imbalanced representation, this issue is at the heart of any conversation around progress and healing. 🌎 "In order to trash the planet, you have to trash people. But if you create a world where you don't trash people, you can't trash the planet. So now we are at a moment where the coming together of social justice as an idea and ecology as an idea, we finally can now see that they are really, at the end of the day, one idea. And it's the idea that we don't have disposable anything. We don't have disposable resources. We don't have disposable species. And we don't have disposable people, either." – Van Jones 🌍 Check out this ted talk by Van Jones on the impact of plastic pollution on the poorest populations. https://bit.ly/4aubOCC 🌏 If you’d like to dig in further, sort for environmental justice resources in our JEDI library. https://bit.ly/49wZEb5

In a recent article published in Science of the Total Environment (STOTEN)), researchers at the College of Natural Sciences at UMass Amherst, including Timothy Randhir of the Department of Environmental Conservation, provide a first-ever examination of oil palm plantations’ far-reaching and wide-ranging disturbances to watersheds. Because many Indigenous peoples rely on water downstream from the plantations for their daily needs, the marked decrease in water quality has the potential to exacerbate public health issues in Indigenous communities.
