💡 I had the opportunity to follow so many enriching discussions on topics ranging from agri-food industry system transition to food democracy, at last week’s #OpenFoodConference in Leuven.
And what was made even more obvious to me: food is a connector! It was great to see so many stakeholders from the whole value chain come together to discuss sustainable food systems.
What I found particularly interesting were the examples from the local level. More specifically, local strategies and initiatives for food system transformation and tackling food losses. I got to learn more about Flanders’ food strategy, and the key role of local municipalities.
👉🏻 One of my takeaways: the increasing role of food councils in driving food system transformation.
The cities of Leuven and Gent were a great example, where their food councils are central for shaping the local food policies and strategies. Developed in a collaborative way, the strategies aim for a shorter sustainable food chain, protein shift, and reducing food waste (among others). Gent’s food policy includes initiatives such as Veggie Thursday and the Food Savers Project which redistributes food surpluses. In Leuven, this includes a logistic co-operative platform that brings farm products coming from within 40km to shorten the supply chain, and the city offers agricultural land to support innovative food projects.💡
