As climate change threatens the future of Ethiopia’s coffee, Adetola Adetayo reports on a rich heritage facing extinction. With Ethiopia as the birthplace of Arabica coffee, producing 17% of the world’s supply, the stakes are incredibly high. Coffee farming not only supports local economies but also sustains cultural traditions, particularly the cherished coffee ceremony. However, climate change and deforestation could reduce coffee-growing areas by up to 59% by the century’s end, endangering livelihoods and global coffee quality. It’s crucial for coffee lovers and consumers to support sustainable practices. How can we all help preserve this unique cultural and economic treasure? Find out here: https://lnkd.in/d8YfvqpX ✍🏾 Research & Writeup by Adetola (Tola) Adetayo 🔍 Reviewed & Edited by Adetoro Adetayo, Tomi Abe 🎨 Imagery by Tomi Abe #sustainablecoffee #ethiopiancoffee #climateresilience #coffeeheritage #agriculturalcrisis #farmersupport #climatecoffee #africanfarmers #culturalpreservation #foodsecurity #arabicacoffee #susinsight

The World Food Forum 2024: Good food for all, for today and tomorrow. WFF Good food for all, for today and tomorrow. Every person on this planet needs good food to thrive, yet the agrifood systems that provide us with food are under increasing pressure. Currently, we are off track to meet Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2, Zero Hunger. In six years, instead of reaching this goal, it is estimated that over 590 million people around the globe will still suffer from hunger, jeopardizing the achievement of the entire 2030 Agenda. At the same time, our planet faces multiple crises that are directly linked to our agrifood systems, including climate change, biodiversity loss, deforestation and soil degradation. In 2024 the World Food Forum (WFF) - a youth-led movement and network to transform our agrifood systems - is committed to the theme: “Good food for all, for today and tomorrow”. The WFF is mobilizing people of all ages from around the world through a range of events, innovations, targeted agrifood investments and climate finance, and solutions designed to spark holistic, strategic and at-scale sustainable agrifood systems transformation. Excited to attend the African Food Systems Forum in Kigali, focusing on the crucial components of traditional food systems. From production to consumption, let's not forget the vital role of natural resources like water, soil, sunlight, and biodiversity. Delving into key questions with fellow delegates: - Who safeguards the natural resources envelope necessary for food production? - How do we sustain production amidst climate change and demand challenges? - What are the Strategies to reduce wastage and promote a circular economy? - How do we integrate and scale nature-positive value chain opportunities? - Exploring spaces for climate resilient indigenous foods and Indigenous Knowledge? - How do we Integrate agriculture policies to include biodiversity, climate change, and sustainability? #FoodSystems #Africa #Kigali #FoodProduction #Processing #Distribution #Retail #Consumption #sustainability

As the focus of efforts to transform African food systems heats up, there is increasing focus on the role which cities and local governments can play leading this change. Channeling climate investment into urban fresh produce markets is one way cities can be part of making change happen at a local level. #afrifoodlinks #throughfood #food2030EU ICLEI Africa

🌱 Climate Neutrality: Growing a Nature-Positive Food Future in Thailand "When farmers protect nature, nature will protect us." This belief has driven Kongsuk Buaban, a maize farmer in Khlong Hat District, Sa Kaeo Province, to embrace sustainable agricultural practices and mitigate environmental impact. 🌾👉 https://lnkd.in/g8xUGQh7 Starting his farming journey at the age of 16, Kongsuk has grown from managing 1.76 hectares to 50 hectares of farmland today. Traditionally, he practiced field burning to clear crop residues but noticed adverse effects on #SoilFertility and the environment. Transitioning to plowing instead of burning, Kongsuk now revitalises the soil naturally, boosting crop yield and quality significantly. 🚜 "The maize is bigger, weightier, with full grains that are arranged beautifully. One hectare can harvest about 11.25 to 12.5 tonnes, which is incredible," Kongsuk shares proudly. His success has inspired fellow farmers to adopt similar practices, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and fostering a healthier community for everyone. 🌿 Yara Africa & Asia (YAA) supports this transformation with tailored agronomic expertise, ensuring sustainable #CropNutrition aligns with evolving agricultural needs. Kongsuk's journey demonstrates the power of knowledge and adaptation in achieving #ClimateNeutrality and Growing a Nature-Positive Food Future. 💚 #YaraAmbitionActivation #NaturePositive #FoodFuture

Launch of ReSAKSS 2023 ATOR – African Food Systems Transformation and the Post-Malabo Agenda! Despite the impressive progress since 2003, Africa in 2023 faces both persistent and new challenges. The post-Malabo agenda for CAADP implementation must further deepen the focus to respond to emerging issues and meet the needs of sustainable food systems transformation in a context of accelerating climate change and multifaceted stressors and shocks," said Dr. Ousmane Badiane, Executive Chairperson, AKADEMIYA2063. "It is our hope that the 2023 ATOR will contribute to the development of a robust post-Malabo agenda which will provide a framework for sustainable food systems transformation for years to come".
