AGRA's Head of Inclusive Finance Hedwig Siewertsen reflects on the 2023 impact report of the ABC fund. She offers solutions to make investments more impactful and how we can break the deadlock of funds that are "too small" to flex their muscle. #impact #investments #africa #agriculture #sme #growthcapital
A new report by Agri-Business Capital (ABC) Fund indicates that over five years, the Fund has provided financing to thirty-three organisations in various value chains, primarily in sub-Saharan Africa. But these funds are not growing enough. My key takeaway: Many small funds that are unable to break even and remain unattractive to DFIs resulting in a vicious cycle of suppressed growth. So what? My opinion is we go the collaboration/consolidation route. Reduce operational costs, achieve the required thresholds/volumes, become more attractive to DFIs — as a result, break the vicious cycle. Maybe not that simple, but definitely achievable.

One learning I got from AGRA's investments in agrifood focussed funds: the Catch 22: too small to break even (many agri-funds cannot cover their costs with the income generated) and not attractive to investors because the fund is not breaking even. How can we break this deadlock in funds that are too small: 1. Convince DFIs to invest in funds so that they reach break-even point (the D in DFI stands for development 😉 but how do African agrifunds get access?) 2. Consolidate, or at least develop shared functions, for suboptimal sized funds to reduce costs and get economies of scale. More ideas welcome on agrifood financing institutions that do attract capital.

Our fourth fund hits the ground running! In the first six months of African Rivers Fund IV (ARF IV) we have committed one-fifth (20.9%) of the USD 98.7m we have raised so far. Since we launched the fund in March, we committed almost USD 21m to eight #SMEs, with tickets ranging from USD 500k to USD 6m. ➡️ We welcomed five new clients in #Angola, the #DRC and #Uganda ➡️ Our first investment in real estate development in Uganda ➡️ Two investments in packaging companies in Uganda ➡️ Two investments in food wholesalers in the DRC, a food retailer and a non-food and wholesale and retail company ➡️ A large investment in an Angolan food import and processing company Our pipeline is filled with many more impactful investments. And we’re close to onboarding new investors. If you’re an impact investor interested in supporting economic development and job creation in some of Africa’s #frontiermarkets, we’d love to hear from you. #impactinvesting #SMEfinance #sustainablefinance

Following the #MSMEday, please join me in this webinar which will be an in-depth discussion on the financing of seed companies in Africa. We will hear from Value Seeds Limited in Nigeria and #MeruAgro in Tanzania how the different types of capital (grants, concessional loans, impact equity, commercial debt) have supported them to grow from a micro enterprise into an SME that they are today. What were the challenges and what made them successful? We will also hear from the capital providers Pearl Capital Partners and AECF what their learnings have been in financing seed companies, what role has Government play and how important is governance and market development? I will share some of the learnings AGRA has documented on what is different about seed companies compared to any other #agribusiness . These are documented in this paper https://lnkd.in/dDkXgXri Please join and register: https://lnkd.in/dGyX6JHa
