Starting in 9 mins - crucial piece of the water/energy nexus puzzle. Sign up for the recording if you can't make it: https://lu.ma/zjjg6fy0
Cala Systems has the potential to save billions of gallons of water, reduce US national emissions by 3%, and save domestic energy consumers about $23 billion a year. They do the core job of delivering hot water at low cost better than any other water heater. Moreover, they empower homeowners to integrate water heating into their homes and personal priorities as never before. The unit they have built saves 15-45% of energy against existing HPWHs, and is a blend of hardware, software and control innovation that is nothing less than beautiful. We're psyched to host Cala Systems CEO and Founder, Michael Rigney, at our next BIV session this Thursday, October 10th from 1-2pm. Register here: https://lu.ma/zjjg6fy0

Mark your calendars: On Friday Nov 1, 2024 (10:00 AM - 3:00 PM EDT), the Commission will hold a Commissioner-led technical conference to discuss generic issues related to the co-location of large loads at generating facilities. "Broadly, issues to be explored at the technical conference may include whether co-located loads require the provision of wholesale transmission or ancillary services, related cost allocation issues, and potential resource adequacy, reliability, affordability, market, and customer impacts."
⚠️Date Set: Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s Commissioner-led tech conference on co-location of large loads at generating facilities will be held Nov. 1, 2024. | https://lnkd.in/eKW6PA9c

🛑 Reality Check 🛑 I finally attended my first YPE SF Bay Area event and it was all about VPPs (it’s what we Hindi speakers call ‘Sone-pe-Suhaga’ - roughly translates to "icing on the cake" or "cherry on top"). 🍰 The panel was hosted by Astrid Atkinson, Smriti Mishra, and Vish Ganti and moderated by Yang Yu who essentially arranged the entire discussion sequentially from - Where VPPs are NOW, Where they NEED to be, and HOW we GET there. 🧩 One of the highlights for me was in answering every question, we had access to 3 perspectives in working in different sections of the ecosystem, with Qcells USA Corp. as manufacturers, WeaveGrid helping accelerate electrification by optimizing EV charging with utilities (and Vehicle OEMs too !) and Camus Energy operating at the center of DER and utility data. It was awesome to see how the pieces of the ‘new’ grid puzzle fit and the areas where the next iteration of improvements will come from. 🧩 🛠️ Another takeaway I had from the talk was that hardware deployment and maturity are slightly lagging behind software solutions as of now in terms of the large scale proliferation of VPPs. Building effective supply chains and deploying effective ‘smart’ hardware with a standardized data reporting and sharing policy seems like the way forward. Till then, the reliance will remain on meter data or aggregations of all individual DERs (thermostats, water heaters, energy storage, EV chargers etc). 🛠️ (I want to shout out the ‘smart panel’ manufacturers because their products can make it much simpler for the ecosystem.) 🙌 💰 Finally, I loved the discussion about the financial viability of the current VPP product. “DR is still the most important DER” was a common theme here but I loved the feasibility analysis of expanding the services VPP programs can provide for grid stability and how these software platforms and their customers should be adequately compensated for it. 💰 This was my first YPE SF Bay Area event and I met a lot of amazing people there too who explained to me about how this organization works (shoutout to Michael, Jenny, Jenya, and Reena) and it’s clear to me now why any energy enthusiast in the Bay Area should definitely come to their events ! 🔋👏

Making real progress is hard. If it was easy, anyone could do it. I recommend looking at, and speaking to, Energy Web - Jesse Morris and Ewald Hesse are leading the way ... "a global non-profit on a mission to accelerate the energy transition by developing and deploying open-source Web3 technologies" ... Green Proofs a key component of their solutions. Real, verified, known impacts. #impact #blockchain #web3
We're excited to share that Energy Web will be at Enlit Europe, where we’ll be discussing how our innovative solutions, developed alongside industry partners, are helping to transform the energy sector 🌍⚡️ If you're attending, make sure to stop by and say hello! 👋

Meet me at #Intersolar. There a few slots left. You can arrange an appointment directly online: https://lnkd.in/d-xsaRj4 Let's discuss your questions and topics or one of the following: - How many hours with negative power prices or prices of zero will we have in the future and what a difference does this make for your revenues from renewables? - How does the German "Kraftwerksstrategie - power plant strategy" and the French energy policy bill influence the future power prices and capture prices for PV? - What’s the influence of increasing battery storage on the power prices and how can you evaluate their potential revenues better? And last but not least: In 2024 Germany is so far the biggest market in Europe for PPA. Will this trend continue and how can you participate in it?

In the latest episode of The Interchange Recharged, David Banmiller is joined by Kelly Sarber CEO of Strategic Management and Vice Chair of NY-BEST, and Anthony Natale, Director of Risk at Fire & Risk Alliance, LLC, to discuss one of the most pressing concerns in energy storage: fire safety. With the rise of lithium-ion battery usage, ensuring the safety of communities and first respondents is more crucial than ever. They explore the challenges of managing lithium-ion battery fires, which can reignite due to thermal runaway, making suppression complex and lengthy. Discover the latest fire suppression methods, the importance of engaging local communities, and how design changes in Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) can improve safety and response times. Listen now to learn how the industry is addressing fire risks in energy storage and what needs to happen next. https://okt.to/YJkO24

Join Olivia Patterson next Tuesday at PLMA's Fall Conference for an interactive workshop on identifying and prioritizing “uncaptured” demand flexibility value streams with a deep dive into localized distribution benefits. Olivia is on a mission to disrupt the industry and help our utility partners stop leaving untapped value on the table. Although markets, grid needs, and accompanying interventions have evolved dramatically since the inception of interruptible tariff-based demand response in the 1970s, modern valuation of demand flexibility is comparatively unchanged – and continues to mainly focus on peak load reductions and associated capacity avoidance costs. However, changing grid conditions – largely fueled by widespread residential adoption of EVs, electrified end uses, and rooftop solar – make us question traditional paradigms surrounding the value of demand response. Conference agenda available at https://lnkd.in/eMaprNPA Hope to see you in Brooklyn!

Cannot wait to this workshop. Tackling value streams is core to advancing their adoption and use.
