Revisiting Automation Myths: Is Automation Really Too Expensive? A few weeks ago, we discussed some common myths about automation. Today, we’d like to revisit one of the most persistent ones: 💭 Myth: “Automation is too costly compared to using human labor in production.” ✅ Reality: While it’s true that automation often requires a higher upfront investment, it usually turns out to be more cost-effective in the long run. The key is selecting the optimal automation solution. Not every situation calls for custom-built single-purpose machines or expensive industrial robots. 🤖 Collaborative robots, for example, can handle many tasks and can be acquired for an amount equivalent to the cost of employing 4 production workers for 3 to 6 months! Manufacturing Automation – Baby Steps The automation process is a bit like training an ML model, stumbles, falls, reinforcements, setbacks and pretty soon your automating! -- “Manual machine #Load-#Unload and #Feeding operations exist in many legacy and even newer production lines and the deployment of #robotic, (#cobot), solutions is often the justifiable approach to automating this operation. There are many applications however, when either the cycle times are too short or too long, (a relative measure), where a custom designed system can be both more cost effective and most important, can be tailored exactly to the application without paying for the greater flexibility provided by a cobot which is not required for the particular application. In addition, the generally simpler design of a custom electro-pneumatic-mechanical solution leads to a lower technology support requirement.
