New paper out in the Earth System Governance journal on biodiversity action in policy sectors outside the environmental domain. Although there are high expectations of 'biodiversity mainstreaming' or 'biodiversity policy integration', our review of academic research shows this governance strategy thus far is not very effective. This is worrisome in view of worldwide commitments to this strategy in the CBD’s Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, ratified in 2022. New Publication: mainstreaming (the integration of biodiversity in non-environmental policies and plans) is supposed to be a key strategy to bend the curve of biodiversity loss. we have reviewed the literature and find that it doesnt really work - and this aligns pretty much with the literature on environmental policy integration, climate policy integration and sdg implementation. we however also identify elements and processes that can change this trajectory- have a look at the synthesis paper and the other contributions to our special issue!

New research suggests that 'biodiversity mainstreaming' has until now been largely ineffective due to non-binding commitments, vaguely formulated targets, “add-on” biodiversity initiatives, and too few resources. Conflicting targets between sectors and unclear responsibilities are also holding back success. The research, led by Prof. Hens Runhaar, suggests that a combination of regulatory measures (“sticks”) and incentives (“carrots”) may be more effective than voluntary approaches alone, say the authors. Legal requirements for biodiversity action, along with showcasing the benefits of biodiversity to different sectors, could encourage greater commitment to mainstreaming. 🌱 Halting and reversing biodiversity loss by 2030 requires not only improved conservation action but also addressing the drivers of biodiversity loss. National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs), currently being updated, as well as their implementation, should adequately integrate the need to mainstream biodiversity across key sectors (from food and agriculture to infrastructure and finance) and to equitably reduce the global footprint of consumption and eliminate overconsumption by 2030, returning within planetary limits. WWF, the Stockholm Environment Institute - University of York and Alauda Consulting developed some policy guidelines to support parties in integrating Target 16 of the Kunming to Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF) into their NBSAPs. The policy brief aims to support parties in: ▪️ Defining the specific component(s) of overconsumption that needs to be reduced; ▪️ Setting a fair but ambitious reduction target (or targets) for them; ▪️ Determining which indicators are best suited to measure national progress; and ▪️ Determining the mechanisms for translating Target 16 into action. The emerging market in biodiversity credits risks becoming a wild west unless guidelines based on the learnings from the carbon credits market are applied, according to a new CBA paper. This emerging ‘nature market’ promises to mobilise funding to help address the global biodiversity crisis, offering private companies the opportunity to invest in biodiversity conservation, restoration, and development to deliver net positive biodiversity gains, such as habitat protection or pest reduction. According to Biodiversity Credits Under the Microscope, by Sven Wunder - as of a year ago, 34 such schemes have been identified globally as in development, being piloted or already fully operational. However, many of the new biodiversity credit schemes, still in their infancy, lack independent verification and any external oversight, as well as transparency in how baselines are set and any form of impact evaluation. Our paper therefore sets out 10 important principles to ensure the integrity and successful implementation of a biodiversity credits market, ahead of COP16 in Colombia which will reconvene parties to review progress made towards halting and reversing biodiversity loss.
