🎨 Last night, the RISQ team had an incredible graffiti session at London's iconic Leake Street, hosted by Marc Craig! We created a mural, learned about the rich history of the area, and even crafted our own galaxy paintings to take home. What a fantastic way to unleash our creativity and bond as a team! 🌌 #TeamRISQ #CreativeCollaboration #LeakeStreet

"𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝗛𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗟𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿" by Banksy was Spray painted on to the side of the Bristol Sexual Health Testing Centre in 2006 ( the inaccessible painting -5m above ground level - was created over a bank holiday behind a scaffold curtain on a wall that faces directly at the City Hall in Bristol ) as a protest at the crackdown by the local council on what was then thought of as vandalism. The council took a poll in the local area to keep or remove the painting. 97% voted to keep it and this is how the first legalised Banksy came to be! Over the years lots of other artists have emulated Banksy's Art or attempted their own "Brand" of street Art -with varying degrees of success and their works are visible today as you wander around the streets of Bristol. You'll see from the picture below that not everyone appreciates the work. In 2009 someone "paintballed" the piece and in a class act of irony, the local council paid to restore most of the painting. Although you can see where they couldn't get the paint off without ruining it. Wandering around this weekend and getting the opportunity to view this and other works by different artists close up made me think of how Banksy inspired a Genre of art.Creating a proliferation of street artists all keen to make their mark, and even though they were rivals they were in fact also students of the game. You can see the influence clearly. This made me think of the changes I've seen in recent times around me in Hull and at @mkmhomehull, we work on our proposition to keep things interesting, engaging, relevant and most importantly (just like the well hung lover) attractive to the target audience. I'm definitely no Banksy that's for sure. But it's flattering to note that where we have made subtle improvements to our service proposition and offer. We see our competitors around us are keen to follow and emulate the example we are setting, I see the influence. Wilde said that "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery"... One things for sure - it's a fantastic time to be a KBB customer in Hull right now. We're levelling up ! #Banksy #streetart #MKM #MKMHOMEHULL #bristol #kitchendesign

Whilst public art isn't the extent of my work as Rocking Chair Riot, it is the area of placemaking where I'm seeing the most need for intervention. The point behind RCR is to advise on ethics and best practices, so not just developing placemaking ideas but ensuring the arts you commission are fair, and equitable, and don't make iconography of the wrong people. In terms of placemaking more generally, I advise on avoiding future pitfalls - are you creating a monopoly of white-owned businesses in your developments without realising? Is a food hall going to endure through the competition? Are you rebranding but want to make sure it's got the right context? Social impact is high on everyone's lists but are you absolutely confident you're applying it to the places you're shaping? Meaningful, sustainable and just places <3 You can get in touch with me at hello@rockingchair-riot.com #placemaking #publicart

#BuildingWithThePublic … Day 41 “Color is a power which directly influences the soul.” – Wassily Kandinsky 🎨 Today, we’re diving into something that might seem small but is deeply significant: our brand colors. When we were in the early stages of crafting our startup’s identity, we knew that choosing the right colors was more than just an aesthetic decision. It was about encapsulating our values and vision. We wanted colors that would resonate with our commitment to neutrality, equality, and inclusivity. After much deliberation, we settled on two hues that hold special meaning for us: copper green and nude beige. Inspired by the majestic Statue of Liberty and the historic scroll of the Constitution, these colors felt like the perfect choice. We’ve named them Liberty and Parchment to honor their symbolism. Liberty represents our dedication to freedom and inclusivity, while Parchment reflects our respect for history and foundational principles. These colors aren’t just part of our visual identity; they embody our mission and the values we strive to uphold. As we continue on this journey, we’re excited to see how these colors will accompany us every step of the way. Thanks for following along and joining us in our #BuildingWithThePublic series. We can’t wait to share more with you! #BrandIdentity #ColorTheory #StartupJourney

What a great project and outcome. Signs matter.
Behold! The inaugural lighting ceremony of the “Signs of Our Times Historic Neon Gallery” around the corner from our building. The neighborhood just keeps getting cooler and cooler. Congrats to Amy Fimbel, Jennifer Stevens and their teams at Capital City Development Corporation and the City of Boise Department of Arts and History for pulling this off. Oh, and to the amazing craftsmen who restored and brought these signs back to life: Rocket Neon, Classic Design Studio and YESCO. Thank you all for this amazing addition to our city. #inspiration #signage #boise

A brillaint article from Karbon Homes about the piece I created for the Byker Estate. You can go and check it out in person and the iconic Byker Wall, why not go for a walk and get to know places better. That is what I love about street art, it takes you down different paths, have new interactions and make you ask questions. Street Art is about curiosity and connection for me. What is Street Art to you? https://lnkd.in/e37XwrRZ

Earlier this year, Libraries Unlimited commissioned Devon-based textile artist, Allegra Galvin to work with communities across Brixham, Churston, Paignton and Torquay libraries. Her proposal, Social Fabric, involved her running public workshops in which participants pieced together segments of fabric which hold specific meaning for them. Storytelling was a huge part of the project, which culminated in the creation of a single large quilt that brings together those individual stories into a rich and multi-layered whole. These are some of the key highlights: • Community Engagement: Public workshops were held where participants created quilt blocks using fabric pieces with personal significance. • Storytelling: The project emphasized sharing stories behind each fabric choice, creating a rich tapestry of community narratives. • Artist Residency: Allegra spent four days in residence at the libraries, with her quilt frame in a public space, so people could ask about the fabrics and learn to hand quilt. • Exhibition: The finished quilt will be showcased at the prestigious Festival of Quilts 2024 at Birmingham NEC (August 1-4). • Local Celebration: A community event is planned for September 12 at Churston Library to display the quilt and share its stories. This project, part of our Creative Communities initiative funded by Arts Council England, demonstrates the significance of libraries as community hubs and the impact of collaborative art projects. As Allegra Galvin aptly put it, "Libraries are places of incredible power and possibility sitting in the heart of our communities. The process of making a quilt lends itself to the sharing of stories." Rae Hoole, Creative Communities Producer, said: “We were overwhelmed by the quality of responses to this Artist Commission call-out. Allegra’s proposal, Social Fabric, shone in its potential to engage our communities, customers and library teams in acts of co-creation that we hope will have lasting impact in Torbay.” To learn more about Allegra's work see www.wildwoodstudio.org. #LibrariesUnlimited #CommunityArt #Storytelling #CreativeCommunities #ArtsinLibraries #SocialFabric #AllegraGalvin #WildWoodStudio #Quilt #Quilting #GroupQuilt #PublicArt #ACEsupported #LoveLibraries #Brixham #Churston #Paignton #Torquay #Torbay #FestivalOfQuilts #ACEFunded #ArtsCuuncil
