Excessive ego can negatively impact the decision-making in the flight deck and crew relationships. An egocentric Captain may dismiss suggestions or feedback, undermining communication and teamwork, both essential for flight safety! This can lead to poor decisions and increased tension while dealing with abnormal situations. Adopting humility and valuing CRM are essential for safe and effective operations.

Imagine a yacht where every crew member feels empowered to lead… Such an environment doesn’t just happen; it is cultivated by captains and Heads of Department who understand the importance of leadership at every level. Onboard a yacht, where often crew members have to juggle multiple roles, a leadership mindset should be embraced by every crew member, from the most junior to the most senior on board. This approach transforms a team from just a collection of followers into a community of proactive and dynamic contributors to the long-term success of the boat and its program. A leadership mindset doesn’t refer to being the boss or the manager on board. It means that every individual feels empowered to take initiative, solve problems, and make decisions that contribute to the overall mission of the yacht. It’s about developing confidence, responsibility, and the ability to inspire others, regardless of one’s position. Leadership culture, on the other hand, is the collective environment that supports and nurtures these individual mindsets. It’s created when the entire crew values leadership development and continuously strives to improve. So… how can we build and sustain a leadership culture onboard? Well, focus on mentoring, coaching, upskilling and providing development opportunities for every crew member. When everyone is encouraged to foster this culture , the yacht becomes more agile, innovative, and resilient. Crew retention improves as a result, too. Remember, it requires a commitment to ongoing development and support. Great yachts are distinguished by their ability to build and sustain this culture. The goal should be to inspire and motivate a new generation of leaders, creating an environment where everyone feels valued and empowered to contribute their best. This positive impact will reverberate throughout the crew, leading to increased engagement, productivity, and overall success. Are You Ready to Risk It All? Recently, I flew to Colorado and chose a seat in the emergency row. My thought process? Extra legroom. What I wasn’t thinking about? The responsibility of saving lives if something went down! Of course, the flight attendant came by with the standard question: “Are you willing and able to assist in an emergency?” I nodded confidently, but inside I was thinking, "Sure... but let's hope it doesn’t come to that!" It got me reflecting—how often do we step into roles or opportunities focused on the immediate benefits (like legroom) without fully realizing the responsibility or risk that comes with them? 𝗦𝗧𝗢𝗥𝗬# 𝟱𝟰 A ship once had a great captain who was highly skilled in sailing. But, his sailors often felt that he only gave instructions and believed they could sail the ship even without him. During one of the voyages, the sailors together told the captain that they knew how to steer the ship and asked him to take rest. The captain, trusting his crew, went to bed early. In the middle of the night, a heavy rainstorm started, and they lost the direction. Few sailors suggested waking the captain, but others argued that they could handle the situation themselves. As they struggled to navigate, a thunderous crash revealed they had hit an iceberg. The noise woke the captain, who quickly took charge and organized the crew. After an hour of intense effort, they successfully navigated the ship away from the iceberg and back to safer waters. The captain appreciated the crew: 𝘐 𝘢𝘮 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘥 𝘰𝘧 𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘢𝘨𝘦𝘥 𝘸𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘦 𝘐 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘢𝘴𝘭𝘦𝘦𝘱. 𝘐 𝘯𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘴𝘪𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘺 𝘨𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘪𝘯𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴, 𝘪𝘵 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘨𝘶𝘪𝘥𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦. A Captain’s role is unique—balancing the authority to make critical decisions with the humility to listen to and value the input of their team. Decisiveness is at the heart of leadership in aviation. When faced with high-pressure situations, the Captain must assess risks quickly, prioritize safety, and take action with confidence. Yet, this decisiveness must be complemented by openness—acknowledging that each crew member has a valuable perspective to offer. The best Captains lead by example. Whether it’s arriving prepared, staying calm under pressure, or maintaining professionalism during every flight, their behavior sets the tone for the entire crew. A Captain who exemplifies excellence inspires their team to do the same. Listening is equally vital. By creating an environment where copilots and cabin crew feel comfortable sharing their observations and concerns, Captains ensure that no detail goes unnoticed. This collaborative approach not only enhances safety but also strengthens teamwork and morale. True leadership in the flight deck is a delicate balance: firm but approachable, knowledgeable yet willing to learn, confident yet humble. What a powerful reminder of the ripple effects of servant leadership! For me, helping others “take flight” means fostering momentum and velocity in the people I serve—whether it’s empowering a team member to take on a new challenge or supporting a colleague as they build confidence in their leadership abilities. These moments of growth are what define us as leaders. As for who’s helped me along the way, I think of the mentors who’ve guided me, the teammates who’ve challenged and inspired me, and the community that’s constantly lifted me higher. It’s a shared journey—one where doing good for others always comes full circle. Servant leadership isn’t just about work—it’s about contributing to the greater good. The community, and maybe even the cosmos, rewards that kind of intentional care.
