Whenever I’m working on a adhoc data request my mission is to learn more about the business problem. As an entry level analyst, I use to focus on resolving the request as soon as possible using the most advanced technology. After gaining more experience… I’ve learned to take my time and understand the stakeholders request by asking more questions and doing a bit of market research if needed. Some steps I like to take when working on a data request after gathering all the requirements and understanding the problem.. Identify all the tables in the database I will need to explore in reference to the problem. This is crucial especially if joins and CTE’s is involved. I like to start my data transformations in SQL and then depending on the request I migrate over to Power Bi or Google Sheets. For simplier reports I usually use Google sheets. In some cases it just makes sense and is easier for collaborations. I love to make recommendations when I notice patterns in trends. Trends really help you see how your product or campaign is performing. For example in a recent project I noticed that our store gets a lot of traffic, but very low conversions so I suggested implementing a heatmap so we can see what visitors are doing and what are some potential roadblocks. I’ve witness data play a key role in securing strategic partnerships, landing new funding deals, improve product development and marketing campaigns. This is why it’s beneficial to take every data request seriously and see if it is something that will actually help the company solve a problem or not. As Data Analyst our job is actually crucial and important. We are almost like a business consultant low key. 🤔 There are things AI can do to help us in our job, but the creativity of our job is irreplaceable. And as I get deeper into the Product Management world it makes me appreciate data even more. How do you attack adhoc data requests? #dataanalyst

Walk with Huy Nguyen . Learn from our (hugely his 😉) experience with successfully helping data teams to implement self-service within their organizations. #data #selfservice #Businessintelligence
Some practical tips on implementing self-service analytics. There's a lot of skepticism in the BI industry with the term "self-service analytics", since vendors kept throwing this terms around to sell to the executives, but when it comes to imlementation, the BI teams have had very bad experience getting it to work. Having worked with customers who both successfully and unsuccessfully implemented self-serve analytics practice, here's a few thoughts on how to implement it better. 👉 1/ First, "self-service analytics" is the solution, what's the problem? I see BI teams get too carried away with achieving a state of self-service, but forgot to ask what problem are they trying to solve with it. Is it BI team overloaded with manual requests, or business teams complaining of inflexible data access? Both are valid problems, you just need to know which one you're solving for, since the implication is big. If it's the former (solving your own problem), can you try of other ways to solve it without forcing the end users to self-serve? i.e can you optimize analyst's productivity to make building reports faster. If it's the latter, then we know we have actual buy-in/incentive from business side. 👉 2/ Self-service doesn't mean letting users start from scratch. Self-serve doesn't mean giving users a blank page with 100 fields to do drag-and-drop. This initimidates them and they wouldn't know how to start. Instead, build some initial base dashboards with high-level metrics, with options to perform self-serve for more advanced users. To some users, being able to change some filter dropdown, or basic dashboard drilling is already self-serve and giving them what they need. If you're sharing self-serve dataset to users, heavily curate it so that it's super straightforward what each field means. Aggressively cut down the number of fields exposed in each dataset. Think of the dataset as a data product, and your job is to give the end users the best UX. Was talking to Thomas in't Veld and we all agreed to call this "cold self-serve" vs "assisted/curated self-serve". 👉 3/ Get users to go through BI onboarding Almost all successful data teams I spoke to have a training or onboarding program of sort. Some even force the users to attend the training before they can get a BI account. Most BI platform is a big mess of dashboards and reports. So there's a high risk an untrained user won't find what they need, or worse yet use the wrong reports. Build a simple deck explaining how you structure your BI system and how the tool works, tell them where each data in the dashboards are. When they ask for something for the first time, get them to go through the training (either by themselves, or via a meeting with you). This also helps you build personal relationship with them, and signal that they can come to you for help. (continue in comments)

Domain knowledge explains the 'why' of what a business is doing and informs the decisions and testing for an application. 🔍 Why Domain Knowledge Matters in Data Analytics: 🎯 Understand Business Context: Domain knowledge helps you grasp the core business objectives behind the data. It’s not just about analyzing numbers but solving real business problems. 💡 Ask the Right Questions: Without knowing the domain, it’s hard to formulate the right questions. Domain knowledge shapes the way you approach a dataset and what insights you seek. 📊 Prioritize Relevant Data: Not all data points are equal! Domain expertise guides you in identifying which metrics matter most to the business. 🔍 Provide Accurate Insights: A deep understanding of the industry ensures your insights are relevant, precise, and actionable. This avoids misinterpretation and improves decision-making. 🚀 Add Business Value: With domain knowledge, you become more than just a data analyst—you’re a strategic partner in achieving business goals. 💼 As a freelance data analyst, I’ve seen how vital domain knowledge is across industries like HR, finance, and more. Taking the time to understand the “why” before diving into the “what” can elevate any data project. What industries do you specialize in? How has domain expertise helped in your projects? #DataAnalytics #FreelanceDataAnalyst #DomainKnowledge #DataStrategy #BusinessGrowth
