Pew Research has indicated that children who exhibit childlike behavior due to trauma are often criminalized within the juvenile justice system. These behaviors, which may include defiance, outbursts, or withdrawal, are sometimes misinterpreted as intentional misconduct rather than manifestations of underlying trauma. Dr. John Bowlby classifies this as Disorganized Attachment Theory style disorder. Very different from robbery and murder. Impact of Trauma on Child Behavior: Children who experience trauma such as abuse, or exposure to violence, may display behaviors that reflect their distress or emotional struggles. Criminalization of Childlike Behavior: Rather than addressing the root causes of their behavior and providing therapeutic interventions, children are often punished for actions that are a result of traumatic experiences. Challenges Faced by Traumatized Children in the Justice System: They may struggle to articulate their emotions and experiences effectively, leading to misunderstandings and misinterpretations of their behavior. Need for Trauma-Informed Approaches: By adopting strategies that prioritize understanding and responding to the impact of trauma on children’s behavior, stakeholders can better support our vulnerable youth and break the cycle of punitive responses. America has over 108,000 men ages 18-45 incarcerated and unable to be productive citizens, why, because many of them have been mislabeled and misunderstood. We can systematically design legislation, programs, and facilities that service our youth rather than send them to jail. https://lnkd.in/e3HSiRyD

MYTH: People in trafficking situations always want to be rescued. REALITY: Misplaced loyalty and expert manipulation keep them from seeking help or even identifying themselves as a victim. The emotional need to stay can be intense when the abuser is also the comforter or caregiver. It becomes hard to separate love from a trauma bond. Service providers must recognize the complexity of this type of bond, and prepare for potential mental health concerns and stages of relapse as a survivor seeks assistance. #MentalHealthAwareness #HopeHeals
