A SAD WORLD MARROW DONOR DAY I got a frantic call yesterday from a stranger from Hyderabad stating that they needed help with finding a match. The normal process is that the hospital sends the HLA reports to all the registries and the registry runs a search. Either a match is found or not. Simple. It turns out, not so simple. The pediatric patients father spoke to me later stating that the hospital had a partnership with only one registry. That one registry doesn't have a match. The doctor and hospital just raised hands stating that this is what we can do? The disgust is just beginning. They contacted another registry directly and again were told that all HLA reports only had to be routed through the hospital and the doctor and they cannot search for a match on their own. The family is struggling big time. What next? 1. As a principle can we pls. establish that if the hospitals contract are WIP, the search will still happen and the patient will not suffer. 2. Can we pls. mandate the hospitals to send every single report through a central agency to all registries. 3. Allow NGO's like BMT Support Foundation to reach out to registries in such cases, so the patients have a chance at life. Our primary focus is patients life. That's it. 4. India has only .04% donors in its registry. In these low numbers we cannot afford to have this kind of red tape in a private scenario. While the hospitals are so busy in bringing every customer, sorry, i meant cancer patient to their door, they cannot mess around with lives of people with their inefficiencies. Who will take the blame if we lose the child? #hospitals, #doctors, #administration, #governingbody, #system, #registry, #inefficiency, #government, #healthministry It's a SAD #worldmarrowdonor day. #Stemcell, #donor, #cancer, #BMT, #NMDP, #bethematch, #sad

Moqadas, an eleven-year-old girl, was diagnosed with bone cancer nine months ago after sustaining an injury to her leg. Her father, who is a taxi driver in Kabul, was unable to afford her treatment. After Moqadas was identified by HBT, we launched a campaign for her treatment. With the efforts of our team, we were able to secure a visa for her and eventually send her to Pakistan. Following initial examinations, Moqadas returned to Pakistan for a second time and was admitted to Shaukat Khanum Hospital. During this time, her pain intensified and affected her emotionally. The tests revealed that her cancer had grown to over 9 centimeters, and Shaukat Khanum Hospital could no longer treat her. Moqadas was referred to the private IRNUM Hospital. Doctors indicated that the only way to prevent the cancer from spreading and to save Moqadas' life was amputation of her leg. Any delay in this procedure could have been life-threatening. Therefore, we consented to the surgery, which was successfully completed. After this challenging procedure and months of battling pain, recent follow-up examinations at Shaukat Khanum Hospital showed that Moqadas' cancer had been completely eradicated and she is no longer at risk. With remarkable resilience and the unwavering support of HBT and donors, Moqadas overcame the disease and returned to her normal life. To ensure the disease does not recur, she will return to Pakistan for final follow-up treatment. We are hopeful that Moqadas may soon achieve full recovery.
