Early this year, we started a School Meals Program at Alendu Primary School where we provide children with nutritious breakfast and lunch. Initially, we served about 96 children but the number has gradually increased to approximately 150 over the past two months. We spoke with Teacher Andrew, a teacher at Alendu Primary, concerning the program's progress and impact. Teacher Andrew reveals that before the implementation of the school meals program, only students at JSS were provided with a limited variety of food and only had access to lunch. Despite the best efforts of the school, many children were still coming to class on an empty stomach adversely impacting their ability to learn and grow. He shares that, since the introduction of the meals program, which now offers a variety of nutritious meals, the change has been nothing short of remarkable. Attendance rates have soared, energy levels are noticeably higher, and the overall health and happiness of the students have significantly improved. He highlights that the cost-sharing model makes meals affordable and gives ownership to the community.. #SchoolMealsProgram #CommunityImpact #Compassion

Client needs are changing, with many NDIS participants requiring more complex, individualised support than ever before. Individualised support is a great thing. But from an operational level, this shift requires NDIS providers to be highly adaptable, resourceful, and equipped with specialised knowledge. Which can often conflict with budget limitations. 𝗦𝗼, 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲: 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗿𝘂𝗻 𝗮𝘁 𝗮 𝗹𝗼𝘀𝘀, 𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲? 𝘕𝘰𝘸 𝘐 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘯𝘦𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘪𝘤𝘦 𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘴 𝘸𝘦𝘭𝘭 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘮𝘰𝘴𝘵 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦𝘭𝘺 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘧𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘵𝘴 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘷𝘢𝘭𝘶𝘦𝘴. Luckily there are other options. That’s why providers get so much out of collaborative planning sessions like the Planning for 2025 Community Service workshop I am running on the 26th November at McLaren Vale. Tickets are limited so book yours now by clicking here: https://lnkd.in/gdkCACUQ Enjoy a hands-on day collaborating and fostering ideas to meet these challenges with peers to create a strategy to effectively manage constraints while enhancing client care in 2025. #NDISProviders #CommunityServiceLeadership #2025Planning #ClientCare #AdaptableLeadership #ResourcefulTeams #ComplexCare #CollaborativePlanning

What are some reasons why the NDIS may agree that an Obi Dining Robot is reasonable and necessary? This is a question I asked during a recent Lunch and Learn session hosted by Amy Vincent from The Therapy Collective, and Amy was able to give some great suggestions. Here’s my take home message… When it comes to requesting AT like an Obi Dining Robot through the NDIS, one of the most important things you’ll need to be able to justify is how it is value for money. For people who can have the Obi set-up then don’t need ongoing assistance with the feeding part, the ‘value for money’ is obvious – the NDIS doesn’t need to fund a support worker to be present during mealtimes. But what are some other reasons? ‘Value’ isn’t always necessarily in terms of a dollar figure. Consider other potential benefits too… When a teenager no longer needs to be hand-fed by their parent for every meal, those shared mealtime experiences can now focus on social connection too. When someone with upper limb ataxia or tremor can now feed themselves without fear of spilling things or dirtying their favourite shirt, we’ve allowed them to maintain their dignity. When a person with physical and communication difficulties can now independently select which item on their plate they’d like to try next, and when they’ll fill the spoon to bring it to their mouth, their opportunities for choice and control sky-rocket. The potential benefits of an Obi feeder will vary between each individual, and it definitely won’t be a black and white ‘the NDIS definitely will/won’t fund one.’ But if you’re an OT who is involved in trialling and prescribing one for your client, remember to think beyond the dollar signs. P.S. Have you experienced the benefits of an Obi Dining Robot for your clients? Share your tips and experiences in the comments. #OccupationalTherapy #NDIS #YourOTTutor
