Respiratory illness is the leading cause of emergency hospitalization in cerebral palsy (especially in GMFCS IV & V). It is associated with extended hospital stays and more days in the intensive care unit. The cost of emergency hospitalization in this population may range from 12-15 lacs (approximately in the Indian context), increasing the financial burden on families.
