This is a momentous occasion, and we at Al Slattery Masonry want to extend our heartfelt congratulations on all your hard work and dedication. But here at ASMI, we also want to celebrate another group of future leaders: those who are choosing a path less traveled – a rewarding career in the skilled trades! ️ Whether you're entering an apprenticeship, trade school, or directly joining the workforce, your decision to pursue a trade is an incredible one. The construction industry offers stability, growth potential, and the chance to build something tangible – quite literally! Tradespeople are the backbone of our communities, and their skills are in high demand. They create the buildings we work in, the schools we learn in, and the infrastructure that keeps our society running. TRUE or FALSE: Skilled tradespeople are “inferior” to white-collar workers It’s heartbreaking to know that many people still think it’s true. But I’m here to dismantle that kind of thinking 🔨 1 ) We are less educated - FALSE Some people think tradespeople aren’t as educated. The truth? Skilled trades demand rigorous training, certifications, and ongoing education. We’re experts in our respective fields, mastering complex skills that take years to hone. 2 ) We earn less - FALSE The reality is, many skilled trades offer competitive salaries with great earning potential. This is especially true as demand for our expertise continues to grow. 3 ) Our career paths are limited - FALSE The skilled trades offer diverse career paths. From apprenticeships to becoming master tradespeople, and even launching your own business, the sky's the limit! 4 ) We have unstable jobs - FALSE I get quite annoyed at this myth. Because the truth is, skilled tradespeople are ALWAYS in demand. Our work is essential, and there’s a constant need for quality craftsmanship. 5 ) Our jobs lack prestige - FALSE Let me ask you. What’s more honorable than building and maintaining the very structures that support our communities? The skilled trades are NOBLE professions, ESSENTIAL to society. A notebook is your best friend as a cadet, it will ensure you are covering all bases and that you are constantly on top of what must be done." What’s the best thing about being a cadet regarding your career progression? "Having the opportunity to learn all the important aspects of the business and residential industry standards. This provides a great base of learning and skills to take to other future roles." Would you recommend Eden Brae as a top employer for individuals seeking employment in the construction industry? It's Careers in Construction Month Maybe you've always thought... * I wouldn't want to get locked into career that means I'd be doing the same job for decades... * I don't want to be limited in income... * I can't go anywhere if I do this job... * This is the type of job someone without college potential should take... All myths! Many who start at an apprentice level in the trades progress to leadership or high level specialization. The shortage in the trades means that you often have your pick of opportunities - and where you work! There's a whole segment of the different trades & careers that refer to themselves as "travelers" because they get base pay PLUS expenses for travel. The bonus?!
