Angling as an Olympic sport? What would that look like? And who would be the big winners? We’ve just run a small story out of the USA, but it could go bigger, and we’re definitely going to take a closer look. The United States Angling Confederation reckons surf fishing could make its way onto the Olympics roster. And well, why not? (Hello to all you breakdancers out there) One thing that may not be certain, however, is whether such a move would boost angling participation. A quick Google tells me that the United Nations reckons winning medals drives up sporting participation in successful nations, but an academic study in Canada found exactly the opposite. The more medals Canadian athletes won in the winter and summer Olympics, the lower the rates of participation in sport in Canada. A report in the UK reached similar conclusions after the London Olympics. We’ll stay across this story, as they say on news shows. https://lnkd.in/ehraBMVf

About 11000 athletes are participating in the Paris Olympics’ 45 sporting categories, including the recent additions like breakdance and surfing. It’s early days yet, but Australia’s currently leading with the most gold medals won while both Australia and the US have won 5 each in total. India is yet to break ground. The United States has always been in the lead in taking home the most medals, followed by Russia and Germany in the early years. Recently, however, China has solidified its place among the top contenders in the Olympic medal tally by strategically focusing on sports that require lesser investment but yield high returns. By excelling in disciplines like diving, table tennis, weightlifting, and shooting, China has managed to maximize its medal count with efficient resource allocation. An efficient strategy, to build world-class proficiency in select sports. In India for instance, If hockey needs an investment upwards of 500cr, Javelin throw would need only about 15cr! #Olympics #sports #strategy #medals P.S.: Loving how special the medals themselves are - each of them contain a piece of iron that comes from the Eiffel Tower!

Russian lawmaker lauds Russian swimmers’ results at World Swimming Championship Russian swimmer won ten medals, including six gold and four silver ones MOSCOW, December 15/ Russian swimmers have demonstrated a brilliant result at the 2024 World Aquatics World Championship (25m) in Hungary, a Russian lawmaker told TASS. Russian swimmers won ten medals, including six gold and four silver ones. "This is a brilliant result. Our swimmers also set a lot of records. We fanned for them and supported them. These results will be a good example for other sports," Dmitry Svishchev, a member of the physical culture and sports committee of the Russian State Duma, or lower house of parliament, said. 2024 World Aquatics Championship (25m) A total of 27 Russian swimmers have been granted neutral status to participate in the 2024 World Aquatics Championship (25m), which is taking place in Budapest, Hungary, on December 10-15. According to the competition’s official website, "Swimmers from around 200 nations will compete in 45 events over six days of action. The World Aquatics Swimming Championships (25m) features an impressive $2.025 million prize purse and a $25,000 bonus for any World Record set at the Championships." In March 2023, World Aquatics (known as FINA until December 2022) decided to bar Russia and Belarus from participating in any future FINA-sanctioned international swimming events. Before the World Aquatics ruling in March 2023, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) issued recommendations on February 28, 2022, advising international sports federations to exclude athletes from Russia and Belarus from participating in international tournaments. #business #finance #financialservices

Another step forward with the establishment of an Independent Commission to undertake a much needed and long awaited review of the water industry. As we collaborate with other sports through the Clean Water Sports Alliance we look forward to the outcome of the commission’s work next year - good safe water quality is not optional - it is a must for the sustainability of our water based sports. #sustainability #sustainabilityinsport #cleanwatersportsalliance #swimbikerun #triathlon
British Triathlon, as part of the Clean Water Sports Alliance, is encouraged by today’s announcement of an Independent Commission and the commitment of the UK and Welsh Governments in tackling the crisis that exists in our blue spaces and the way they are managed. Following the successes at the World Triathlon Championship Finals in Torremolinos last week, we risk losing triathlon events and training venues with open water swimming in this country for local participants, Age-Group and elite athletes unless we see effective protection and management of lakes, rivers and water bodies in the UK for swimming. For too long the needs of shareholders has been placed ahead of that of the environment and the local communities that can and should benefit from access to waterways across the country for recreational engagement in water-based sports. We will take great interest in the review and contribute to the recommendations through the Clean Water Sports Alliance to ensure they meet the needs of the triathlon community, and we will support the Commission to bring about real change for our blue spaces. https://brnw.ch/21wO2a5 Eve Joseph Ruth Daniels Bill James Ben Cummings

Case: Italian Swimming Federation v. World Aquatics (CAS OG 24/18) 📅 Date: August 2024 ⚖️ Court: Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) Ad Hoc Division - Paris Olympics Parties: - Applicant: Italian Swimming Federation - Respondent: World Aquatics - Interested Parties: Hungarian Water Polo Association, Italian Olympic Committee, International Olympic Committee 📝 Facts: 1. During a men's water polo quarterfinal match between Italy and Hungary at the Paris Olympics, Italian player Francesco Condemi took a shot that entered the goal but his hand struck a Hungarian player's face. 2. Referees reviewed the incident using VAR and ruled it a "violent action," disallowing the goal and excluding Condemi from the remainder of the game. 3. Hungary won the game after a penalty shootout. 4. Italy filed a protest, which was rejected by the referees and subsequently by World Aquatics' Jury of Appeal. 5. In a separate decision, World Aquatics' Management Committee decided not to impose additional game exclusions on Condemi, citing lack of malicious intent. 6. Italy appealed to CAS, seeking cancellation of sanctions against Condemi and replaying of the game from the incident point. 🔑 Key Issues: 1. Applicability of the Field of Play (FOP) Doctrine 2. CAS jurisdiction over "final" decisions by sports federations during Olympics 3. Review of referee decisions and subsequent appeals 📜 Decision: The CAS Ad Hoc Division dismissed the application by the Italian Swimming Federation. 💡 Key Learnings: 1. The Field of Play Doctrine applies to decisions made by referees during games and subsequent appeals of those decisions. 2. CAS has jurisdiction over "final" decisions by sports federations during Olympics, as per the Olympic Charter. 3. Referee decisions can only be reviewed if there's evidence of bias, malice, bad faith, arbitrariness, or legal error. 4. Mere error in a referee's decision does not automatically qualify as arbitrary, irrational, or an abuse of discretion. 5. The FOP Doctrine protects the autonomy of officials, ensures uninterrupted completion of events, and maintains certainty of outcomes. #FieldOfPlayDoctrine #CASJurisdiction #OlympicArbitration #SportsLaw #RefereeDecisions #WaterPolo
