Canada's official moratorium on #deepseamining stands in sharp contrast to the actions of Canadian registered mining companies which have been planning destructive #mining ventures in the #PacificOcean. Our report raises critical questions: (a) What will #Canada do to ensure these companies align with it's moratorium position? (b) How will #Canada hold these companies accountable for environmental damage? Community concerns about environmental impact and external involvement highlight the necessity for transparency and community-wide engagement. Without community consent, even projects with economic benefits can face significant opposition. Securing a social license goes beyond regulatory compliance—it's about earning trust and support from impacted communities. Meaningful dialogue and collaboration with residents, environmental groups, and government bodies are essential to address concerns and align projects with community values. Mining projects must be economically viable and socially and environmentally responsible. Sustainable mining starts with sustainable land use. Planning, financing and restoration efforts should be from the onset of a mining project. We cannot have sustainable mining with land degradation. I was privileged with many others to be invited by United Nations University-FLORES and G20 Global Land Initiative to a workshop on Post-Mining Landscape Restoration, Dresden, Germany Legacy, current and future mining land impact and its restoration research, policy options, planning, financing, project undertaking, best practice and knowledge sharing was the cornerstone of the workshop. Over the past two weeks the Council of the International Seabed Authority has been meeting as it continues to negotiate the challenging topic of deep-sea mining regulations. The crux of the matter involves trying to balance the interests of countries and companies that are ready to extract important minerals from the deep seabed as well as organizations and countries that are calling for a ban or precautionary pause on all mining activity until there is more scientific evidence on the impact of mining on biodiversity and underwater cultural heritage, among others. This is such wonderful news!! The idea of putting a gold and copper mine next to an internationally listed wetland should never have made it past the first hurdle. The Resources Regulator has done the right thing here. Next steps: cancel the whole exploration licence and permanently exclude this location from mining exploration in the future. When we talk about mining being part of the energy transition, it’s important to understand that the green economy is not a green light for all forms of mining. We urgently need “no go zones” established for mining in places like the Macquarie Marshes and the Mudgee region which is home to a thriving agricultural and tourism industry.

We need a more coordinated systematic planning approach to decide which mines should go ahead based on: a) genuine contribution to global decarbonisation b) local and regional impacts on people and biodiversity The current project-by-project approach serves no one well

Despite global calls for a ban, Norway approved deep-sea mining in January 2024, with licenses expected in 2025 and mining possibly starting by 2030. Proponents highlight its importance for a low-carbon economy, while scientists warn of unknown ecological impacts.
