A recent study conducted at Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin and published in Science challenges previous assumptions about how human neurons operate compared to mice. - Unlike in mice, where signals often loop back and forth, human neurons primarily communicate in one direction, enhancing the efficiency and capacity of our brains for information processing, with potential applications in AI development. The discovery, made using rare tissue samples from epilepsy patients and an advanced "multipatch" technique, reveals insights into human brain function. - Findings suggest that the human brain's directed network architecture could explain our unique cognitive abilities. - This research could inspire advancements in artificial intelligence networks by conserving resources and enabling simultaneous task handling. A picture can speak more than a thousand words. A recent study by the Callaway lab showed that our brains use smart circuits that are specifically designed to respond to combinations of colour and form together in a systematic way. Thinking about the possible implications for how we retain and process information that is shared with us in presentations and other media. The diverse applications of BESA products in #neurophysiology are highlighted by the wide range of research from our customers. A quick review of recent publications has revealed exciting new trends. Here are a few highlights: ▶ Neural Oscillations and Statistics: Pastötter et al. used beamforming to localize increased post-movement beta synchronization in functional movement disorders. Brain Communications 6:5, 2024, fcae301 ▶ Connectivity and Visual Processing: Hu et al. studied brain responses to familiar vs. unfamiliar app icons, finding differences in the fusiform gyrus. NeuroReport 34:10, pp 521-525, 2023 ▶ Effects of Cannabis: Schantell et al. observed a marked suppression of gamma activity in specific brain regions in regular cannabis users. Human Brain Mapping 45:11, 2024 (e26787) ▶ Clinical Population Analysis: Busboom et al. explored motor performance in individuals with cerebral palsy, revealing that cognitive interference impacts beta and gamma oscillations, which in turn affects reaction times. This suggests a role of top-down motor control influences in cerebral palsy. Neuroscience 536:9, pp 92-103, 2024 #neuroscience #science #medtech

🧠 How does the cerebellum influence our sense of timing? Recent research from the Wagner group sheds light on how it helps track long intervals of time, influencing everything from speech to motor coordination. These findings not only deepen our understanding of brain function but could guide future treatments for cerebellar disorders. The article offers an insightful dive into how granule cells’ activity ramps up and down, helping mice (and potentially humans) fine-tune their timing abilities with practice. Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience & Erasmus MC It’s fascinating to see how cognitive functions and motor control overlap within the cerebellum, as discussed in the article. Future research into these findings could have significant implications for treating patients with cerebellar defects, and I’m excited to see where this exploration will lead!
