It’s easy to fall into the trap of believing that trade protectionism can remedy the unintended effects (whether credible or not) of globalisation. However, rising global protectionism is not a zero-sum game; its effects are multidimensional and complex. As Sergio P. Ermotti highlights in this piece featured in the Financial Times, the threats of deglobalisation are very real. These could disrupt capital flows, stifling innovation, reducing efficiency, and weakening competitiveness. We risk entering a lose-lose scenario in this era of deglobalisation. It’s crucial for policymakers to take a step back and reconsider the long-term efficacy of industrial strategies aimed at creating domestic champions: 1. How will these policies impact the global economy over time? 2. More importantly, how should liberal democracies craft their strategies in response to the political capitalism led by China? 3. Can the Chinese model of political capitalism be countered by emulating the very industrial policies being contested? The answers to these questions could define the future of not only liberal meritocratic capitalism but also global growth and stability. #deglobalisation #tradepolicy #liberalcapitalism #politicalcapitalism #policymaking

While it may be tempting to dismiss the immediate impact of this US policy announcement due to the relatively small magnitude of trade being affected, doing so would overlook a broader point. This isn't just a one-off, narrow development. Internationally, it's part of a tit-for-tat between the two largest economic powers, a trend likely to intensify in the years ahead. Domestically, it's part of a broader shift in economic policy stance that also involves greater use of industrial policy. #economy #china #tariffs #trade #markets Financial Times

But as covid Supply chain constraints and shortages seem to Accelerate the movement for localized supply chains in everyone their own hemisphere . Trading blocks 🌍🌏🌎are being to build out Localized manufacturing , for 😷ppe and other sectors based on cost of energy . That can be see in the Mexican/ usa 🇺🇸 boarder states , the move of Manufacturing to South east Asia India , Vietnam , etc . Also the reformation of trading blocks based on Ideology such as aukus 🇦🇺🇬🇧🇺🇸, nato , the quad 🇦🇺🇮🇳🇯🇵🇺🇸, vs bricks movement , belt and road.
