Quick tip for polishing up SME-led articles: Mix up how you introduce quotes. Instead of "'This is a very clever and intriguing statement, and it has never been said anywhere on the internet before,' said John," try: 1. Using a colon. "For John, the message is clear: 'This is a very clever and intriguing statement, and it has never been said anywhere on the internet before.' 2. Attribution in the middle of the quote. "'This is a very clever and intriguing statement,' says John. 'It has never been said anywhere on the internet before.'" 3. Paraphrasing (especially if the quote isn't punchy): e.g. John made a clever and intriguing statement, unlike the typical statements you've read before. Have an important presentation coming up, but are worried about going over time? Here's a little hack. Assuming you have written up what you want to say verbatim (or close to it), use the text editor's word count function. Then take a text that's short, and which you feel you can read out with gravitas. I find the Gettysburg Address, at 272 words, to be a good pick. Then time yourself reading the text, imagining yourself as the protagonist in an epic story. This will make you enunciate and discourage you from rushing through a presentation that may be long and not on a particularly exciting topic. Finally, calculate time to read presentation = (time to read Gettysburg Address)*(word count of presentation)/272 That's my hack, how do you do it? Let me know in the comments. #publicspeaking
