🛑 “Damage to cultural property belonging to any people whatsoever means damage to the cultural heritage of all mankind.” — Preamble to the 1954 Hague Convention ⛔ This is not just a statement—it is an obligation. An obligation the world has chosen to ignore. ☢️ For two years, Sudan’s cultural heritage has faced an unprecedented and deliberate assault: 🏛️ Museums looted 🪬⚱️Ancient sites shattered 📜Centuries of history erased 🆘 And yet, Sudan’s cries for help are met with silence.📵🚫 ⚠️ While other nations receive enhanced protection without delay, Sudan’s heritage is left: ❌ Neglected ❌ Unprotected ❌ Forgotten How can we claim to protect global heritage while turning our backs on Sudan? ⁉️ How can we stand by as an entire chapter of human history is being wiped out? ⁉️ This is not passive negligence—it is deliberate inaction🟥 It exposes the failure of the international community to meet its obligations and responsibilities. 🚫 Sudan’s cultural treasures are not just Sudan’s—they belong to all of us. The destruction happening today is a loss we will all bear tomorrow. ❓ Where is the solidarity? ❓ Where is the action Sudan desperately needs? 🕰️ The time to act is now—before we lose what can never be replaced. 📵 Silence makes us complicit. 📵 UNESCO United Nations Blue Shield International FAR ICCROM ICCROM International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) International Council of Museums (ICOM) International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) ICA International Council on Archives

As a towering Geneva landmark, the Musée international de la Croix-Rouge et du Croissant-Rouge has been a familiar sight for years. Thanks to the support of Rebecca Tapscott, Daniel Rincón Machón, & their team at "Civil Wars," I wrote about it for the new "Arts and Culture" section of their journal! While words will not make the experience justice, I hope the short review is of interest for those engaged with the intersections of material culture, international law, and 'the humanitarian adventure.' https://lnkd.in/eAUaHcYp

*In Rome, looking back for what is important ahead* it may have gone unnoticed 🤷♂️, but Monday marked the 67th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Rome, the EU's founding document. Thinking about this event as well as about the Rome of antiquity 🏛️ and the more recent past like the financial crisis 🏦 , I can see some lessons for Europe especially in these tumultuous times: The – literally – fundamental importance of the rule of law, the role of a division of powers, whether within states or between them, and the key question of whether policies help to reduce or increase social inequalities. More in this commentary for Global Policy Journal: https://lnkd.in/dTGfNNNP.
