Many of you might have seen the famous anecdote about Isaac Stern, the virtuoso violinist, being told by a fan, "I'd give my life to play like you!" to which he simply replied, "That I did!" Over the weekend I attended a Nature Photography 📷conference in beautiful Waterton National Park. The conference was a powerful reminder that mastery, in any field, takes immense dedication and a relentless pursuit of excellence. It wasn't just about the stunning final images showcased by these incredible and award-winning photographers; it was about all the planning, technical knowledge, patience, and individual creativity all coming together in that perfect moment. We often see successful products and product careers and yearn for similar outcomes, but we forget the countless hours akin to wildlife photographers waiting days in the bitter and unforgiving cold for that elusive wolf shot. 🛣 This conference served as a powerful reminder that mastery is a journey, not a destination. Feedback. We have a complex relationship with it. We want it; we don't want it. We feel deflated by it; we feel energized by it. This week I received feedback from my 17-year-old son. Josh has been into photography for 2 years to my 10 years. We are good at different things. I am a nature and landscape photographer; he has excelled with sports photography and individual portraits. So his decision to trust me with his senior portraits was an important one. There is no question he could have asked any number of fantastic photographers to take his pictures. I was nervous which seems nonsensical given I gave birth to my subject. We got off to a tough start. I had his head too high in the frame, the lighting was uneven, the contrast too stark, or the pose didn't work. As he reviewed my early images, he gave me a masterclass in how to find the best light; how to compose the shot; how to set my depth of field and shutter speed. We both agreed those early shots were not great. Because of the deep trust, I was able to accept the feedback without defensiveness or shame. It felt like a gift, to be guided gently and constructively to a better outcome. When trust is present, feedback is the kindest thing we can do for another person. It says I care about you, and I want to help you grow. After many shots that won't make the yearbook, we co-created one that we both feel proud of. #feedback #growth #careerdevelopment #joyfulwork
