LinkedIn expresses its deepest principles in the language of robots afraid of lawsuits. • "We value stakeholder-centric synergistic growth" • "Our commitment to excellence drives innovation" • "Integrity, teamwork, and customer focus guide us" Bloodless corporate platitudes. Contrast with the legend of the ancient Spartan Code: "Return with your shield or on it. Surrender is worse than death. Let your deeds speak. If you must boast, let it be through action. The strong protect the weak until the weak become strong. Honor is everything; profit without honor is loss." That's a value system that forges iron souls. Less “articulating corporate mission values”. More carving values in blood and bone that will echo through generations.

Can we back off a bit with the Elon hate? Whatever you think of him, we’ve heard it before. 1️⃣ Elon doesn’t care what you think about him. He has his own agenda. 2️⃣ 8 billion other people don’t care what you think of him. They have their own opinion. 3️⃣ Elon is the richest man on the planet. Whatever playbook he’s using seems to work pretty well. 4️⃣ Everything nasty that’s been said about Elon has already been said. Multiple times. 5️⃣ He seems to have a lot more influence lately. Best not to poke the bear. Elon’s secrets are documented. In the Wait But Why posts and Walter Isaacson’s book. Probably in a million other places, too. Please. Write nothing more about Elon. He doesn’t need your oxygen. Read and learn. Copy and adapt the things that resonate, reject the things that repel. Take notes. Try things out. There’s a master class waiting for you, but it will take effort to make it your own. Closing thought: There’s enough negativity in the world right now. No need to add to it. Drop me a comment.

This is how Elon lets it sink in when pursuing big challenges. Like myself, many of you would like to know the formula or know it already. So here goes He has: Deep-rooted Passion Massively Transformative Purpose (MTP) Singular, Unwavering Focus First Principles Thinking Thinking in Probabilities Not Settling for "No" / Not Giving Up This allows him to take on big challenges by applying radical solutions and the use of exponential technologies How do you tackle ambitious breakthrough goals?

I'll try to wrap-up my long-winded/poorly worded story with one post. Thanks to all the release of all the new technologies (for which Elon Musk is directly responsible), some of us are enjoying professional revolutions. How I work... how I think about work, has been radically transformed. Examples: I have a business plan with tangible milestones. All of my processes are defined. Most of my SoP's are written. My first-month goals are clearly defined. My 'business machine' is partially written. I know what the business needs to acquire and what it doesn't need. My workloads are prioritized ( !!! ) And finally, my technical expertise has expanded greatly, and will continue to do so. Thanks for reading this 3-part miniseries about having a mid-life crisis while being terminally online.

Why we need more virtue in public discourse. Another excellent piece from Jemima Kelly. ▶ We really need to get beyond hurrah/boo emotivism. Much in the vein of Elizabeth Anscombe's 1958 critique of consequentialism, Kelly shows how prevailing attitudes to Elon Musk reveal an ongoing attachment to the hurrah/boo theory of emotivism in contemporary moral judgment. ▶ The way we analyse Musk says as much about us as about him: "None of us are so straightforwardly 'terrible' as Musks' critics would have him; nor are we as heroic as fans think he is.... By creating a taxonomy of heroes and villains, we are in fact tied up in the same moral framework as Musk himself." ▶ 3 things we need more of in our moral discourse: 1. #character; 2. #debate; 3. #nuance The Oxford Character Project
Musk shows us that moral binaries are of little use

I found this on NewsBreak: Elon Musk Overrides X CEO, Torpedoes High-Profile Contract https://lnkd.in/gV3r4Ek4 Written by Matt Milano Monday, July 29, 2024 Share on facebookShare on pinterestShare on twitterShare on linkedin Elon Musk is proving to be a difficult owner to work for, even for X CEO Linda Yaccarino, single-handedly torpedoing a high-profile contract she secured. Yaccarino is in the unenviable position of being tasked with turning around X’s fortunes, building up ad revenue that has taken a major hit since Musk bought the social media platform. Unfortunately, Yaccarino is learning first hand that Musk may well be the biggest obstacle to her successfully doing the job she was hired for. According to The New York Times, Yaccarino brokered a deal that would see former CNN anchor Don Lemon bring his web-based show to X. The deal was a big win for Yaccarino, with Lemon’s being the first high-profile, mainstream show to move to X and support Yaccarino’s vision of diversifying X’s content by providing more traditional programming. Unfortunately for the executive, Musk was Lemon’s first guest and the interview did not go well. Throughout the interview, Musk became increasingly testy in response to questions he didn’t like. The next day, the Times reports that he sent a message to Lemon’s agent saying, “Contract canceled.” A single uncomfortable interview and Musk undid all the work he hired Yaccarino to do, further cementing his reputation as a petulant executive who responds impulsively. Musk is increasingly being blamed for Tesla’s dropping sales, with many seeing the executive’s antics as an unwanted detriment to attracting new customers. It seems Tesla isn’t the only company suffering from Musk’s behavior, with X turnaround plan in jeopardy as a result of his actions.

Ever played Polytopia? 🌍 Elon Musk’s philosophy, as captured by Walter Isaacson, reminds me of a critical Polytopia lesson: “Play life like a game, do not fear losing. You will lose, it will hurt the first 50 times, but once you get used to losing, you will play each game with less emotion.” This struck a chord with me, especially in the context of the accounting industry. In an era where accounting is not just about numbers but also about navigating through a maze of technological advancements and regulatory changes, fear of failure can be our biggest hurdle. Musk’s narrative, with its ups and downs, teaches us the power of resilience and the importance of viewing each setback as a lesson rather than a failure. Imagine applying this game-like approach to our work. Every new regulation, every technological challenge, and every unforeseen event becomes a level in our game. The focus shifts from fearing failure to solving problems and advancing to the next level. What’s a challenge in our industry that you’ve turned into a learning opportunity? How has embracing failure helped you innovate and grow in your role? Let’s transform our perspective on failure and success, and lead the charge in redefining what it means to be resilient in the accounting world. #Accounting
