Book Recommendations March 23, 2024 SHELLA ZELENZ MAR 23, 2024 Today’s readings include historically first published books (meaning the first actually published book written in the 11th century), and a few books I was required to read in college (a Presbyterian college, no less). Why would I include those books? Well, it seems that things in America have taken some turns since the 1990’s when I read those books, and those who would have supported broader thinking back then are burning those books now. I find it worrisome. https://lnkd.in/dUkCH2_d #booklovers #bookrecommendations #history #culture

HOW do you rebound from disappointment and disaster? Australian author Andrew Matthews has titles that are best sellers in 48 languages across 70 countries. Says Andrew, "I never planned to be an author. I just had some messages I wanted to share - based mainly on my own mistakes!" Andrew's down-to-earth books - illustrated with his own cartoons - have gone global. "Being Happy!" and "Follow Your Heart" have become self-help classics. His latest title 'Bouncing Back' pinpoints seven key things that resilient people do to build better habits. I have always found his books entertaining, beautifully illustrated, and easy to read with clear motivating messages backed by sound psychological principles and research. #resilience #bouncingback #positivepsychology #positivemindsets

Among the seminal texts of the 20th century, Nineteen Eighty-Four is a rare work that grows more haunting as its futuristic purgatory becomes more real. Published in 1949, the book offers political satirist George Orwell's nightmarish vision of a totalitarian, bureaucratic world and one poor stiff's attempt to find individuality. The brilliance of the novel is Orwell's prescience of modern life—the ubiquity of television, the distortion of the language—and his ability to construct such a thorough version of hell. Required reading for students since it was published, it ranks among the most terrifying novels ever written. . . . #vogandwod #vogandwodbooks #vogandwodbookstore #ikejabookshop #bookstoresinlagos #books #bookstagram #childrenbooks #childrenbestseller #bestsellerbook #beinspired #inspirationalbooks #fiction #nonfiction #tradingbooks #battlefieldofthemind #1984 #johnorwell #readlearnknowgo
