Drinking from a firehose ❤️🔥 In Day 4 of my review of the Perplexity course for teachers we dive into the reality of what it means to start teaching or take responsibility for a new course. Whether you are looking forward to joining a new school like our incredible colleagues Sophia High School or will be teaching a new course in September, this is the time of year when educators begin to put hours of preparation in to the development of schemes of work and plans. To a certain extent, it feels like starting all over again. From reviewing the requirements of courses, finalising certifications, submiting a syllabus for approval, and then preparing the details of each and every lesson plan, we often start from scratch, have to learn quick, and have a lot of work to do. Enter Perplexity Content is the problem, but we need a better and smarter way of working to bring all the threads together. Let’s be real. What’s more we will be asking complex questions which would be very difficult for traditional web searches like how has the programme of study changed over the years. I'm a fan of Duolingo (though the Hungarian course leaves much to be desired!-Duo- hit me up if you need some help with that one), but I have to say that some (not all) of their so-called efficacy studies are not reliable. This latest one, for example- it claims that "After completing five sections of Duolingo, French and Spanish learners knew as much as university students who took five semesters of language classes". Among the issues with the data: 1) was the starting level of these students self-reported?? (negates all results) 2) were the number of hours studied the same for both University students and app users?? (if no, negates all results) 3) what type of language courses did the university students take (credit-bearing, etc)? 4) what were the specific outcomes being measured and the criteria for success?

Attention is in fact a cognitive task that requires a lot of energy and our brain is not wired to stay focused for very long periods. When you are designing a training session, consider breaking up the content into smaller lessons as this can increase retention. By using mobile devices, students can consume the content at their pace. If you are delivering day-long sessions, it's essential to include formal breaks and to alternate important and less important topics to give your audience the ability to disconnect, relax and be ready to focus again.
