There have been a number of articles and commentary in the past week talking about the opportunity that the new government has to reset the role of batteries in the UK electricity thinking. But they need to act fast. https://lnkd.in/eJZefu7p At the same time they aren’t getting the help that they need from the infrastructure operators. This FT article is particularly damning - years of under investment perhaps and not enough coherent drive from Ofgem? https://lnkd.in/evPjV7Fe The UK has a real opportunity to make smart grids at micro and macro level a thing of the present. But it does need government leadership. Taking over the system operator is hopefully a sign of future direction. Mr Milliband we look to you to support the innovation and investment that this country needs. #netzero #powervault

The DoE releases a new Liftoff Report: Innovative Grid Deployment. "The technologies the new report covers could increase the capacity of U.S. grids to serve peak electricity demand by 20 to 100 gigawatts, the DOE found." Getting more out of the existing grid is non-optional given the constraints around construction of new lines. https://lnkd.in/eUkRb2CK

It's interesting that many of us in the electric utility sector have been reluctant to adopt the use of carbon fibre in the grid. We are more than happy to have our family climb into an airplane constructed with plenty of the material, but assume that it will somehow let us down when it forms the core of a transmission conductor. Fortunately, more and more asset owners are seeing the value, particularly when it comes to reconductoring transmission lines as a means of moving more power to growing load centers. Often, the alternative is constructing a new line which can take a long time, add significant costs and face fierce opposition. New lines will always be needed in situations where one doesn't exist and power needs to flow. However, when an existing transmission line is simply out of capacity, advanced conductors are most often cheaper, faster, and far more efficient. As we continue with the electrification of society, saving time and money are top of mind with regulators, utilities and ratepayers. For those of you in the growing ranks of asset owners that have done your due diligence and realized the benefits, bravo. If you're on the fence or simply curious, let's talk. How a simple fix could double the size of the U.S. electricity grid Upgrading existing high-voltage lines could double the flow of power through the electricity grid. The limitations of the grid are slowing the transition to clean energy. This work has been slow because utilities profit more from building new lines than upgrading them. https://lnkd.in/e4jHCzmM #RewireTheGrid
