🏀 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗲𝗻𝘁 🏀 In high school, I had a quirky basketball coach who used to say things like, "You're going to run until I get tired." And when he smiled, you knew some serious running was about to commence. Despite all of his idiosyncrasies, he was an excellent basketball coach. One thing he taught me that has stuck with me all these years is: 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗲𝗻𝘁. He adjusted the old adage, "Practice Makes Perfect," because he believed if you practice doing something the wrong way, that would become permanent. Practice alone doesn't make perfection; you have to be practicing the right things. Otherwise, you'll pick up a lot of bad habits that are hard to break. This lesson has been invaluable to me—learning the right way to do something is crucial before making a habit out of it. This principle applies to every aspect of life, from professional skills to personal development. Watching my son pursue his dream of making the high school basketball team has been a lesson in resilience. When he was in 8th grade, he was told he wasn't good enough, despite being clearly better than some of the kids that made it. The coaches picked a roster only partially to do with talent, and unfortunately, we encountered the same story every year since. This year, we knew going in that the tryouts were just for show – the team was already selected long before any drills or scrimmages took place (they even posted the team roster to Instagram 2 months before tryouts - 🙄). But even knowing the odds, my son suited up and gave it his all. What has astounded me is his ability to pick himself up, time and time again. Despite the setbacks, he comes back stronger, more determined, and more skilled each time allowing himself only a little pity party before he is back at it again. Ironically, these rigged tryouts have taught him something far more valuable than any place on a high school team could: resilience. I no longer hope he’ll make that team (especially seeing as I have heard the coaches are not that good and don't really treat the kids great). Instead, I’m grateful for the life lesson he is learning and what he is teaching me. He has real coaches teaching him basketball outside of school but the lesson of resilience he is learning will serve him well no matter where he goes. This experience has instilled a skill in him that we all need in our careers and lives: to pursue our dreams, no matter the odds, and if we fall, to get back up, every single time. As the Japanese Proverb goes - Fall seven times, stand up eight." I hope by sharing this, it helps you see a path to get back up if you have been knocked down - don't ever stop chasing the dream.

Is it tough for other former college athletes to watch your kids play sports and hold your tongue? Because, wow, it can be a struggle! 🙃 As someone who lived and breathed competition for years, it’s hard not to want to jump in with advice or correct them mid game. When you’ve been coached at a high level, you naturally see every detail. But here’s the thing: my kids aren’t out there to win championships (yet). They’re out there to have fun, grow, and find their own way. Holding back the urge to coach from the sidelines is a challenge. I mean, I’m really trying not to be like my dad with his distinct whistle mid-game, critiquing every move! 😅 What they need more than pointers is encouragement—and space to make their own mistakes (and maybe some extra time outside of practice with mom.) 🙃😄 So, former athletes, how do you manage the balancing act between biting your tongue and helping your kids? The whole mental toughness thing has been floating around after the unfortunate incident with an American college lacrosse team. It got me thinking about what mental toughness actually is. For me it’s very contextual. A high stakes card player, a surgeon performing intricate operations, someone coming back from late stage cancer, an athlete in competition all require mental toughness in some form. It’s very situational, very dependent on the scenario in play. It’s more than just the physical grind. I love the concept of scenario training in sport. Determining what scenarios in the sport are the most challenging and training them over and over. I don’t mean matching the physiology, I mean practicing the mental, tactical and technical elements as well. Overcoming bad refereeing decisions, choosing the right skill at the right time, making a mistake but not dwelling on it, defending for long periods of time, being a player down, the opposition has got momentum and is finishing fast. These scenarios are examples of mental toughness in the contexts of the sport. They require attention from the coaches as well as the strength & conditioning staff to get the most out of them. To me they should be what we base our training activities around as they are the ones they will face over and over. Two weeks ago, I failed my daughter. And I was really hard on myself about it. Too hard, all things considered. We were en route to a gymnastics competition a few hours away. We'd just stopped for a quick lunch. Back in the car, we were singing our hearts out to Life Is A Highway by Rascal Flatts. Just an hour left till we got there. The phone rang. Michigan number. I sent it to voicemail. The phone rang again. Same Michigan number. This can't be good. I answered. It was Coach Brooke asking if we were ok. A horrible feeling came over me: what had I done? I had doublechecked the calendar! I was sure we were on time! And we were on time...for the competition the following weekend. I hate making mistakes. But it didn't feel good to be so hard on myself about it. And that didn't fix the issue either. Here's the 5-step approach I'll aim for next time... 1️⃣ Practice self-compassion: Give myself grace and acknowledge that making mistakes is normal. 2️⃣ Find the silver lining: Look for a glimmer of hope or learning—there's almost always at least one! 3️⃣ Learn something: What did this mistake teach me that will help me grow (and avoid this pitfall in the future)? 4️⃣ Share what I learned: I can help others from my experiences. 5️⃣ Plan next steps: What can I do to move forward? ...because if one thing is certain, there will be a next time. Sigh.

As we approach the high school sports seasons a word on coach-player-parent relationships. The the vast majority of coaches see our athletes much more clearly than parents do. Parents love their kids so much (not a bad thing) and want the best for them (not a bad thing), but can’t we all admit that at times these feelings for our kids might make us a little shortsighted? ( I know at times it was for me). And can’t we also admit that fighting their battles is not what is best for them? (Been there). You know what is the best for the student-athlete? Overcoming adversity. Working harder than everyone else. Getting better just for the sake of being better than they were yesterday. Learning to have hard conversations. Staying late at practice. Taking extra shots. Running extra sprints. Busting their tail in offseason. Failing and overcoming it.

Watching him play is always a joy, but it’s also a reminder of a valuable lesson he’s learned recently: the importance of listening to your body when it needs rest. Earlier in the football season, he faced an injury, and though it was tough to sit out, taking that step back allowed him to fully heal and come back stronger. It’s not just about being on the court—it’s about being ready to give your best when you are. This lesson isn’t just for athletes. Whether it’s in work, life, or sports, knowing when to pause, listen, and re-engage can make all the difference. Sometimes stepping back is the bravest and smartest move we can make to show up better and stronger for what matters most. Let this be a reminder for all of us: rest is not the enemy of success—it's often the foundation of it. 💪
