Gunjan and I recently entered an AI Horror Short Film creating competition by Curious Refuge. The competition is still open and underway, I am sharing my thoughts on the status of the field: * AI Image and Video generations have improved leaps and bounds over a short period of time. Refer to Will Smith eating spaghetti videos for reference :) * General Access to cutting edge and tools, allows for easy experimentation and casual use. Some of my favorite tools and technoligies: Midjourney, OpenAI's Dall-E, Runway, Luma AI's Dream Machine * Availability to cutting edge research papers in public sphere (arXiv). Access to human knowledge on Generative AI for images and videos has never been so easy :) Along with that, I see the following to be the next steps for the industry to address: * Settling copy-write laws with regards to training of publicly available models. The transparency on training data sets, and correct attribution will set a strong foundation for the industry to flourish. * Open Source/Research models are being made available by great contributors to the industry, however the training cost and access to large GPU clusters creates a boundary for further rapid development in the field. Though being part of the hacker community who work on quantization of the models, release fine-tuned models, etc. is exciting and creates a much needed culture around AI. * Generative Video still lacks coherence (incorrect anatomy, adherence to prompts) and is the next big step for better video creation. Everyone likes to talk about what AI can do. Here's a great video breaking down exactly what AI can't do from a design perspective. A great example is asking AI to design a transformer that can actually transform. In the end, even with AI you need someone with design experience and taste to get it to all come together.

I needed a break yesterday ... so, of course, I went to see #KingdomOfThePlanetofTheApes (which is the longest title ever!). I was blown away by the use of technology in the film. It's a fantastic example of how AI is improving the tools that digital artists and filmmakers can use to create realistic environments that seamlessly blend with real world settings. And, yes, I had to do a review! I looked on IMDb.com to see who worked on the film, figured out what kind of work they do, and made some assumptions as to how those companies probably used their tech to make this movie magic.
