One of the toughest challenges for founders takes place, surprisingly, when their startup is actually doing well. Most founders are great at the 0 to1 stage, this is why they became founders at the first place. But as their startup grows, they lack the experience, skills and often the passion to become a leader of an organization. Being fast and creative is no longer helpful and they need to become more process oriented, long term thinkers. Without the right guidance and support they might get frustrated, confused and fail in their new evolved role. How do you think one can overcome this challenge?

I spoke to a founder last week who said he "wasted two years by choosing the wrong CTO". 🤬 There's no doubt being a startup founder (and particularly a non-technical one) can be tough. But a baseline set of metrics early on can make all the difference. ✅ ✅ ✅ Many startups say they don't need best practice or metrics, but the reality is, waiting until later is a high-risk move. Neglecting governance, risk management, and technology best practices early on can lead to painful, costly problems down the line. 😢 You don't need enterprise-level bureaucracy. But simple, scalable practices from day one can be the difference between thriving and stumbling as you grow. 🏃♂️➡️ It's about setting up the right processes to help your startup move faster and make better decisions now — not just for when you're a bigger company. Do you think you can predict the future? Lots of startup founders act like they are psychic. I get it. When you believe you have a great idea, it’s easy to assume that your idea is the next big thing. But most startups don't make it past the first few years. If you're not following a lean approach, you're only increasing your chances of failure. And if you are not embracing a data-driven approach and continuously iterating, you are wasting valuable resources. Instead, focus on validating your ideas and minimizing risk. Stop wasting resources on unproven ideas. #leanstartups #productmanagement #agilesoftwaredevelopment #cameo

The #1 most valuable lesson to internalize for someone working at a startup for the first time: you can just do things. Unlike big companies, startups want to win more than they want to "do things the right way" or "follow the right process". If you have a good manager, they are going to be stoked you tried something new, not threatened. When things look broken, they probably are. When you're surprised something hasn't been tried, it's probably not that it can't work, just that no one has had time for it yet. Just do things.

Most startup founders fail because of this one reason: They don't believe in themselves! There I finally said it 😪 I have sourced 1000+ deals in the last 3 years, managed a portfolio of 220+ projects, and have seen many of them wiping out in challenging markets It does act as a setback for a VC but here are the major reasons: 🚩 The founders had no plan B 🚩 Lack of long-term vision 🚩 Improper team structure 🚩 Not enough belief in themselves The last one was a big-time red flag for investors ringing the bells that things may go south in tough times A great product, real-life utility, top-notch team, and millions of user base won't do the magic if the captain of the ship has no belief in the trail of the voyage they are on! ⚓ To all the founders out there: Believe in what you are pitching first 😎 Keep up with #mehta_and_more for more such #startup content ✌️

👋 Stepping out of my comfort zone to officially introduce my Substack: Chief of Stuff. I started CoS a couple of months ago after years of writing down observations and experiences in my various startup roles. My goal is to keep posting once a week on topics related to scaling, team building, org development and more.
