Protecting deep sea submarine cables is next to impossible. So it is not surprising that NATO is looking for a seamless satellite back up system as today most of its traffic does traverse subsea cables. I can envision narrow band free space lasers being used to move military communications between Europe, North America and also some NATO members like Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. A ground based laser beams up to a satellite, which then uses a laser to relay via other satellites to a US ground station. Narrow band free space lasers are highly secure and already used for short range air-to-air communication in the US Air Force. NASA's future deep space communication network will be based on free space lasers as they offer much higher bandwidth and security. It is basically impossible to eavesdrop on directed narrow band laser beams whereas standard satellite radio frequencies are an easy target. And narrow band free space lasers do not share frequencies. #subseacables #security #satellite #freespacelasers https://lnkd.in/dVEB9m_y

Ukraine's battle against Russia shows the importance of integrating data from satellites at the battle-edge. The fact that most of the data is coming from commercial satellite systems is important but beside the point here. The USSF and DOD should: 1) evaluate priorities and investment decisions to see if they adequately reflect the importance of integration, networks, and the ground-based segment of space systems and: 2) evaluate what investments are needed to protect the ground-based segments of DOD and commercial space systems. Space-to-the-warfighter or bust!

“In competition or conflict, space is the ultimate high ground, and we must be able to secure the domain for our use, while denying advantage to the adversary … By working together, we better achieve integrated deterrence, and our collective efforts are greater than any individual contribution." - The Honorable Kristyn Jones, Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Financial Management and Comptroller We couldn't agree more! Thank you Honorable Jones and United States Space Force for highlighting the historical Link 16 work SDA is doing with our Australian partners. Link 16 is a tactical datalink communication system used by the United States, NATO, and coalition forces to transmit and exchange real-time situational awareness data among all network participants. To learn more about the efforts with Space Force, SDA, and our Allies and partners, read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/eeEJa9be #SemperCitius #PWSA #Link16 #USSF #International

Russia's counter to DoD's resilient space? The space race is heating up again, in a dramatic fashion. This week, VCSO Gen Guetlein spoke about how Russia and China are developing CONOPS to take out the DoD's proliferated constellations, which enable space superiority. As constellation numbers increase into the hundreds, conventional means for taking out these satellites are not cost effective. Russia appears to be resorting to a shocking strategy that would include nukes in space. In May of this year, ASECDEF for Space Policy John Plumb testified about this game-changer at a House Armed Services Committee hearing ( DOD Official Confirms Russia Is Developing an 'Indiscriminate' Space Nuke (airandspaceforces.com) ). The exploding of a nuke in space would be indiscriminate in that in addition to military satellites, commercial, civil, and international satellites would be taken out. This destruction would have a global impact on global security as well as global economic prosperity. In the past, almost all nations of the world have adhered to the 1967 Outer Space Treaty. One of the key principles of this treaty is that States are not allowed to place nuclear weapons or other weapons of mass destruction in orbit or on celestial bodies. It would appear that Russia is going to disregard this treaty and hold the world's space systems at risk. The question for the United States and the world is what should be done to prevent this potential capability from being developed? From reading the articles, it does not appear that diplomacy is working! What do you think? How can the world stop Russia from putting nukes in space? From The Hill (by Brad Dress): "The 5-year-old U.S. Space Force is moving quickly to confront what is becoming its priority challenge: the threat of anti-satellite weapons (ASATs) from foreign adversaries, including Russia and China. The Space Force is building up its space defense architecture to help modernize the Space Surveillance Network (SSN), which monitors objects and potential threats in space. It comes as the military branch has struggled to close gaps in space domain awareness." #govcon #defense #space #spaceforce

OSINT - China "Frankly, China is moving at a breathtaking speed. Since 2018, China has more than tripled their on-orbit intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance satellites," Gen. Stephen Whiting, commander of U.S. Space Command, said here on Tuesday, during a talk at the 39th Space Symposium. "And with these systems, they've built a kill web over the Pacific Ocean to find, fix, track and, yes, target United States and allied military capabilities," he added. A "kill web," in case you were wondering, is "a dynamic network that seamlessly integrates intelligence and warfare capabilities across various domains, including land, sea, air, space and cyberspace," according to the U.S. Marine Corps. https://lnkd.in/eC_Y7CCB
