Exciting news! Introducing the Saint Paul Shared Ownership Collaborative!
We are teaming up with BIPOC-led organizations with a shared belief that our communities should have the power, resources, and support to control and make decisions about their land, jobs, and housing.
We imagine strong networks of shared ownership businesses working together. Our goal is to empower local community members to create, own, and protect their homes and workplaces. As a leading organization in Minnesota, we advocate for policies, allocate resources, and offer expertise to make shared ownership models a practical and available way for BIPOC and intentionally underinvested communities to build wealth.
As a group that values racial justice, cooperation, and abundance, we understand the importance of working together to create positive change. Our collaboration includes Metropolitan Consortium of Community Developers, Model Cities of Saint Paul, Inc., Rondo Community Land Trust, and @West Side Community Organization (WSCO)

Earlier this month, a few of my colleagues at Douglass Park Asset Management and Lemor Development Group, including Easton A. Bell III, Rousol Aribi and Viviana M. Addo, attended the Fostering Neighborhoods: Hospitals and the Development of Affordable Housing conference hosted by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.
With a worsening affordable housing crisis in New York City and a scarcity of land, policymakers need to connect affordable housing developers with a range of institutional stakeholders, including faith-based organizations and hospitals to increase the supply of housing.
According to the NYU Furman Center, there is the potential to add 30,000 units on hospital owned land. However, developing these units wouldn’t come without some challenges, including the cost of redeveloping this land, changing the zoning to accommodate these units and securing community support.
My colleagues and I look forward to continuing to participate in these conversations on how the affordable housing industry can creatively use the resources that are available to us, including searching for ways to repurpose underutilized land and creating new partnerships to increase the stock of housing in NYC and nationwide.
As we celebrate the future of our nation, let's not forget to build a strong foundation for their tomorrow. Invest in properties that will shape their communities, provide safe and nurturing environments, and create opportunities for growth.
Remember, the properties we invest in today will be the homes, schools, and playgrounds of our children's future.
Let's build a legacy that will make a difference in their lives.

Mayor Eric Adams, in collaboration with Goldman Sachs and The Community Preservation Corporation, has launched a $50 million initiative aimed at empowering Minority Business Enterprises (MBEs) within New York City's affordable housing sector.
The New York City Minority Business Enterprise Guaranty Facility is designed to catalyze up to $500 million in private construction lending, marking a big stride toward inclusive and equitable housing growth.
This initiative not only addresses the urgent need for affordable homes but also seeks to dismantle the systemic financial barriers that have long marginalized minority developers.
Given the city's agencies already awarding over $6 billion to MBEs in the last fiscal year, New York appears to be paving the way for a future where diversity and equity are the cornerstones of urban development.
What are your thoughts on this new initiative?

BIG’s Housing Co-op Initiative took shape in 2023 as housing changemakers recognized the potential of deep collaboration to expand opportunities for community governance of housing and the creation of housing co-operatives.
This peer learning initiative created space to share, ask questions, meet partners and advance shared goals around cooperatively managed housing. Keep an eye out as this work evolves in 2024.
