Our working style has a massive impact on our kids, especially if we don't deal with it well. I spoke with 2 friends recently who still hear the critical voices of their stressed-from-overwork parents in their heads, driving them to make unwise choices decades later in a displaced kind of response to those (not listening) parents. (As Frederick Buechner said: "Of the Seven Deadly Sins, anger is possibly the most fun. To lick your wounds, to smack your lips over grievances long past...to savor to the last toothsome morsel both the pain you are given and the pain you are giving back--in many ways it is a feast fit for a king. The chief drawback is that what you are wolfing down is yourself. The skeleton at the feast is you.") As you pause this weekend, please consider: 1. Am I passing my stress on to my family? (If so, what can I control about it or do I need to look elsewhere for employment?) 2. What can I do for those suffering around me? Sometimes people need a friend or neighbor to reach out--that could be you--when they're too hurt to see their need for a listening ear. And that's not even talking about kids suffering from parental absence, more-than-verbal abuse and neglect. I want to highlight Dessiree' J. for desiring to improve the lives of foster children suffering in these ways. I hope that we as a generation can break that cycle for these needy members of the next generation after us, so our kids will grow up not being or knowing anyone suffering like my aforementioned friends. ~ There is room for hope even looking at times like this.
