Today we will introduce you to a small part of the history of Bulgaria. Founded in 681 AD, Bulgaria is one of Europe's oldest countries, with a history intertwined with Thracian, Roman, and Byzantine civilizations. Its early prominence is highlighted by the creation of the Cyrillic alphabet during the First Bulgarian Empire under Tsar Simeon I, a significant cultural achievement that continues to serve millions across Eastern Europe and beyond. As a medieval powerhouse, Bulgaria left a lasting imprint on Slavic culture, arts, and spirituality. Over the centuries, Bulgaria endured many challenges, including nearly five centuries of Ottoman rule, which shaped its traditions and resilience. Following its liberation in 1878, Bulgaria began its modern statehood journey, navigating through the turbulence of two World Wars and decades under communist rule during the 20th century. These experiences significantly influenced the nation’s political and cultural evolution. Since the fall of communism in 1989, Bulgaria has embraced democracy, becoming a member of NATO and the European Union. These milestones mark its commitment to modernization while maintaining its rich historical and cultural heritage. Bulgaria today reflects a harmonious blend of ancient traditions and forward-looking aspirations.

There once was a long-running game, To decide on a small country's name, Macedonia, step forth, Not the south, but the north, Yes, it's all been a terrible shame. But now we all know what to do, Add the "North" to the name, that's the clue, Now that Greece can agree, Let's all live fair and free, Macedonia, cheers, here's to you! I've just enjoyed a fascinating two weeks in the small Balkan nation of North Macedonia, which might be best known for its long-running dispute with Greece over the name of the country. Although present-day North Macedonia does lie entirely within the boundaries of ancient Macedonia, the ancient kingdom also included parts of Bulgaria and Greece, and the latter has its own region called Macedonia so objected to the new nation using the name for itself. After being known internationally for some time as "FYROM" (Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia), this little country eventually signed the Prespa Agreement with Greece in 2018, establishing the official name of the country as the Republic of North Macedonia. Here's a picture of the statue of Alexander the Great – sorry, "Warrior on a Horse", as they are obliged to call it – in the centre of Skopje. It just shows the importance of words and the impact they have. #digitalnomad #germantoenglishtranslator #italiantoenglishtranslator #freelancetranslator #remotework

❤️ #morningthoughts 163 years ago, for the first time after centuries of division, Italy ended being “a mere geographical expression,” as the prince of Metternich had sarcastically called it. Differences were thus coming together into a single organism that from then on would have to stand on its own two feet. Was this really the case? Not really, or at least not so perfectly. After all, the Unification of Italy came on the heels of the “short century,” a period of great changes, of epocal transformations. One had to be lucid and farsighted to have the ability to understand that it is precisely in a period of crisis that one must work for the future because changes must be ridden, not suffered. Today history is again presenting us with the same challenge, and since nothing repeats itself in the same way, the transformation we are experiencing is even more complex and articulated than the previous one. Pictured are some suggestions for getting started.

Travel through Portugal, and it quickly becomes clear: Spain is viewed as a friendly rival. From casual comments by tour guides to the many castles and battlefield monuments, the relationship between Portugal and Spain is steeped in a history of competition and camaraderie. For centuries, the two nations have shared a unique bond—a blend of common history, rivalry, and mutual respect. MANY Portuguese see Spain as a larger neighbor, they also embrace a friendly rivalry that has been shaped by centuries of shared experiences and contrasting identities. https://lnkd.in/dCADFEx2
