🌿 Honored to represent IFAD/ARCAFIM at the third Technical Committee meeting on Uganda’s National Green Taxonomy, hosted by the Climate Finance Unit (CFU) of the Ministry of Finance, Planning, and Economic Development. 🌍 Today’s discussions at the Protoea Skyz Hotel were pivotal, focusing on the draft of the National Green Taxonomy, a critical framework for directing investments into sustainable and climate-resilient projects. The NGT aims to align Uganda’s financial flows with its ambitious climate goals, as outlined in the updated Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) and Vision 2040. Key takeaways from the session include: 🔹 Strengthening the role of the AFOLU sector, which is expected to deliver 82.7% of Uganda's mitigation efforts. 🔹 Uganda’s commitment to reducing GHG emissions by 24.7% by 2030, with a focus on both unconditional and conditional actions. 🔹 The importance of creating a robust green finance ecosystem through international collaboration, private sector engagement, and clear regulatory frameworks. It was great to collaborate with incredible minds in the climate finance space, and we captured the moment with a group photo 📸. Exciting times ahead as Uganda continues to build a resilient, low-carbon future! Environmental Sustainability for the private sector in Africa: A paradox of cooperation and competition. Profit out of monopoly! The private sector is the backbone to both government revenue and the general society through value chain systems. cooperation Governed by one principle above all others- the principle of " monopolistic profitability!" The private sector will have to negotiate it's way through the modern day demand for Sustainable development within the ambits of green socioeconomic policy domain whose philosophy is that of cooperation or embracing integrated ecosystem fabric of: economy, environment, and society (people). People and environment first The private sector should always understand that people are now masters of the trade, due to free flow of information, they are knowledgeable with what they want from the market and their decisions and influence is final in the entire socioeconomic and environmental value chain system. In order to remain relevant in the new game, the private sector will have to learn new and cost-efficient mechanisms of doing business. 🌍 The Role of NEMC in Shaping Sustainable Investments in Tanzania. As Tanzania continues to attract new investments, the role of the National Environment Management Council (NEMC) is more critical than ever. NEMC ensures that development aligns with sustainable environmental practices, balancing economic growth with ecological protection. During my recent meeting during the investment and business forum in Dubai with Mrs. Lilian Lukambuzi, Senior Environmental Management Officer at NEMC, we discussed the importance of environmental awareness in new investments. Mrs Lukambuzi emphasized how compliance with environmental regulations is not just a legal requirement but also a pathway to creating long-term, impactful projects that benefit both investors and local communities. Key takeaways from our discussion: 1️⃣ Sustainability Matters: Investors must integrate environmental considerations from the project inception phase to avoid future challenges. 2️⃣ Strategic Guidance: NEMC provides crucial expertise and oversight to ensure developments meet global environmental standards. 3️⃣ Future-Focused Investments: Adhering to NEMC guidelines not only protects Tanzania’s unique ecosystems but also enhances investor credibility and project viability. On September 19th at the 12th Annual International Conference on Sustainable Development 2024 #ICSD2024 - “Solutions for the Future", organized by the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) in collaboration with the Global Association of Master’s in Development Practice Programs (MDP), I will be speaking on my project "MAKING SAFE, INCLUSIVE AND ACCESSIBLE, GREEN AND PUBLIC SPACE THROUGH TRANSFORMING LOCAL CANALS. ." as a poster presentation to be presented during the parallel sessions under Theme 4. Sustainable Development Goals 2024 index and dashboard . Pakistan stands at 137 out of 167 countries in SDG 17 goals. We stood at 128 in 2023, so a decline is visible . Whereas scores on most goals are either stagnant or 50 percent less than the required , scores on education , sustainable cities and communities , peace, justice and institutions are decreasing. Note : We have to meet these goals by 2030.

Yet, challenges remain: hunger impacts over 783 million people, underscoring the urgent need for systemic change. A new report reveals how one of Africa’s leading development banks is attempting to address the challenge of reducing its impact on nature and biodiversity. The report, titled “A case study on nature data” was commissioned by the African Natural Capital Alliance (ANCA) and co-published by the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA) – a leading member of ANCA – and Oliver Wyman. The DBSA, inspired by the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD), is leading the way on how it can advance integrating nature and climate finance into its decision-making process. DBSA’s Head of ESG, siloshini naidoo emphasises the commitment to sustainable development in Africa, stating, "Our collaboration with ANCA and Oliver Wyman underlines our dedication to promoting long-term prosperity for the continent through environmentally conscious investments." One of the significant challenges highlighted in the report is how to assess the environmental impact of large-scale, complex linear infrastructure and scattered development projects. To address this, DBSA is developing a bespoke solution to classify projects based on their impact on natural habitats.
