📣 📣 📣 The two questions Kelly Morris asks for you to consider* below are so important. 🖥 📧🖱 If you go through your own online donation process, you might be surprised (albeit, horridly) by what you uncover. 📊 Our most recent online donor retention benchmark report shows that only 49% of organizations sent a thank you email within the first week of making a donation. 😯 ❗Don't assume you are sending a thank you to first-time donors. Trust, but verify. 👟 *necessary caveat: keep in mind these questions as you go through this process must be considered from the viewpoint of being in your donor's shoes—NOT in your fundraiser or marketer shoes 💬 P.S. Comment below or send me a message if you want a link to the full research study!
Almost all nonprofits now provide a way to donate on their website. But when was the last time you reviewed each step? Or even donated? Checking the steps your prospective donor takes when they make an effort to invest in your cause needs to happen frequently. Then, ask how you can improve the donor journey. -Can your soon-to-be donor easily see the value of the organization and the vision your nonprofit hopes to achieve? -Are you set up for donors to receive a thank you and receipt for their gift? Put yourself in your donor's shoes. Big or small, every donor will enjoy smooth navigation on your website, leading to an investment in your nonprofit's work.

Misconceptions about fundraising are abundant. One prevalent fallacy is the belief that large donations mainly come from wealthy seniors. However, research shows that people are more inclined to give when they feel a personal connection to the cause. This underscores the importance of emotional ties and individual beliefs in philanthropy. Other misconceptions include the idea that fundraising success is solely dependent on the size of the donor's bank account, rather than their passion for the cause. Understanding these misconceptions is crucial for effective fundraising strategies. Are You Fundraising Strategically and Focusing on Larger Individual Gifts? On average, we know the Pareto Principle applies to fundraising as much as anything else. Broadly speaking, that would mean 80% of the money comes from 20% of the donors. Whether it's 70/30 or 90/10 or whatever, larger donors Individual and institutional) almost always make up the majority of your giving. Second, from year to year 86-88% of all charitable dollars come from individuals (including individual and small family foundations). That means if you only focus on foundations and corporations, you're leaving a ton of money on the table. Third, the biggest gifts come from cultivating and asking one-on-one. How many gifts at the top of your giving roster came without individual attention? Given all that, are your organization’s fundraising efforts focused where they can make the biggest impact? Yes, it would be amazing if we could have a broad base of support and giving felt more democratic, but it's hard enough to raise funds as it is and we can't keep setting the bar higher. So I believe we should go for the gifts that can really make a difference. And don't be afraid to ask for something big. Nonprofits, make sure to integrate Planned Giving with Annual Giving! Here are three effective strategies to get started: 1. Educate Your Donors: Inform your donors about diverse giving options. For those at retirement age, highlight the advantages of the IRA Charitable Rollover. 2. Active Listening: During donor interactions, pay attention to the hints they drop about their preferred giving methods. If they mention supporting multiple charities, introduce the concept of a donor-advised fund. Tailoring suggestions to their interests can lead to more meaningful contributions. 3. Combine Messaging: Leverage your existing communications to include information about planned gifts. Share stories of donors who have included legacy gifts in their wills. This not only educates but also inspires others to think long-term. By integrating planned giving with your annual campaigns, you open the door to lasting impact and sustainable growth. #PlannedGiving #NonprofitStrategy #LegacyImpact #Nonprofits #Fundraising2024 #ChangeMakers
