On Monday, February 12, Charlotte City Council has an opportunity to #InvestInPeople. Everybody has to go to the bathroom, but when someone is experiencing homelessness, finding accessible bathrooms is a challenge. Roof Above is asking Council to increase access to public bathrooms with thoughtfulness to location and safety.
The Council will be voting on re-criminalizing ordinance 15-83, which is about public urination and defecation.
Hello, my name is Randall Hitt and I work at Roof above State Services Center. You might notice that I'm losing my voice, but before I completely lose it, there's such an important message I want to share it with you. So I'm going to make sure that I get it out. Imagine if you are unsheltered and you already have the top trauma and stress of being outdoors and not knowing where you're going to lay your head, when you're going to have your next meal or when you're going to drink next. So imagine the added stress when you have no idea where you're going to be able to go to the bathroom. That need a arises. And in addition to that, when you're not feeling well, it's even worse. We are actually here at our day services Center, a long time resource for people experiencing unsheltered homelessness. And at the core of our work, we provide a lot of essential services. So think about things that you and I might take for granted, like taking a shower, doing your laundry, even getting lunch. While the other thing that we do here, something that we all have in common as humans, is the need. To have a place to go to the bathroom at our day surfaces center. We do offer a solution of having a public restroom, but we are one place, one location specific time. So Charlotte is a very large community and we have on shelter population all around the city. So we don't believe that anyone who is unsheltered wants to go to the bathroom in public. But if you are unsheltered, that might simply be your only option. So we encourage strongly encourage the city of. Charlie to invest in more public restrooms that are easily accessible. So thanks for listening to this message, thanks for your support of Roof above. And most importantly, thanks for your support of helping those who are experiencing homelessness.
