A few years ago I was hiring for a product marketer. I received 541,380 applications, which is also the exact population size of Malta. Here's what made candidates stand out: - Sending me something personal, like a hand-written letter with the details of my home address, blood type, and an item fished from my garbage - Headshots, specifically 3/4 headshots with an avant-garde filter, which in no way influenced my hiring decisions based on physical appearance - Made an effort to show up. One candidate followed me to and from work for a month straight, showing both perseverance and dedication - Keen negotiation skills; for example, kidnapping my dog to get an extra 5% on the total remuneration - CV's focused on the results of their work, rather than their responsibilities. Why would I choose someone who was 'in charge of the paid strategy across the marketing funnel' when I can hire someone who has 'scaled 16 companies to $600,000,000 ARR' and 'achieved an ROI of x30,876%'? - Didn't use AI to write their applications - that's not what AI is for. AI is for writing job descriptions - Clear understanding of balancing stakeholder management and positive outcomes; specifically managing to make me feel smart and special, as that would be the most positive outcome - Had gained experience outside of product marketing, and outside of marketing, like coding, plumbing, fishing, and wilderness survival skills - Providing example work. The best of these was a year-long strategy, detailed to the week, with budget allocations, campaign calendar, and predicted ROI.
