"The situation for women and girls in Afghanistan is dire." "Since that time, the Taliban has systematically targeted the fundamental rights and freedoms of women and girls, via a tightly woven patchwork of decrees, policies, and practices. This litany of edicts continues to dictate attire, curtail freedom of mobility, and restrict access to education and professional opportunities – effectively erasing the voices and perspectives of women and girls from public spaces and impeding realization of their inherent human rights. Key international actors – including UN Member States, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights in Afghanistan, and the Chair of the Working Group on Discrimination Against Women and Girls – have used terms such as ‘gender apartheid’ to describe the dynamic prevailing on the ground. To its core, the situation for women and girls in Afghanistan is dire." #EndGenderApartheidInAfghanistan #LetAfghanGirlsLearn #Sheneverforgetandneverforgive #Afghanwomen #StandwithAfghanWomen #Women_Peace_And_Security #WomenHealth #WomenInLeadership #WomenAndClimateCrises #GenderEquality #Justice #RoleOfLaw #Afghanistan #HumanRights #SDGs

The change starts at the root of the problem. That's why education is the best weapon to address the gender gap that still exists. The fact that in 2024 education is still prohibited for women in many countries is a global social and economic setback. Investing in women's education is crucial to combat this. That's why, alongside Malala Yousafzai and her Malala Fund, I have created a fund where you can be part of this movement and invest in our future. Let's ensure that every girl knows she's not alone and that we believe in her 💜 Click on the following link to invest: https://lnkd.in/d3X4Gp3i
Since the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan in 2021, they've issued over 80 decrees targeting women’s rights — systematic discrimination best described as gender apartheid. Yet there are no legal avenues to hold the Taliban accountable. Recognising and codifying gender apartheid is an important and effective tool to ensure justice in Afghanistan. On International Women’s Day and beyond, share this video and amplify the stories of Afghan girls to help the fight to end gender apartheid.

In advocating against Gender Apartheid in Afghanistan, the international community often generalizes women’s experiences, overlooking the intersecting oppressions faced by those from marginalized ethnic groups, such as the Hazara. Intersectionality is not only an academic field or analytical tool; it is a vital form of critical praxis essential for creating meaningful social justice. In this article for End Gender Apartheid in Afghanistan, I examine the double burden of gender and ethnic discrimination faced by Hazara women and how their experiences could be included in advocacy efforts.

Gender Apartheid in Afghanistan is a serious threat to the human rights of all women. However, the growing international advocacy effort fails to highlight the unique aspects of discrimination suffered by women from marginalized ethnic groups, such as the Hazaras. Hazara women suffer the double burden of gender and ethnic oppression, underscoring the urgency of an intersectional approach in countering Apartheid and Taliban patriarchal violence. Thank you Carola Signori for shining a light on this crucial issue! You can all read more about it on End Gender Apartheid in Afghanistan website.

🚨Gender Apartheid in Afghanistan: The Silent Suffering of Afghan Women and Girls The recent statement by Malala Yousafzai underscores an undeniable truth – what’s happening to Afghan girls and women under Taliban rule is nothing short of gender apartheid. It's been three years since the Taliban’s return, and during this time, Afghan women and girls have faced a systematic denial of their fundamental rights. Girls are banned from schools, women are restricted from marketplaces and workplaces. This isn’t just oppression – it’s a calculated effort to erase women from public life, and it calls for urgent action. Afghan women activists and global advocates aren’t asking for mere sympathy; they’re demanding that the international community criminalize the Taliban’s gender-based persecution and recognize it as a crime against humanity. As a society, we cannot accept these policies as “normal.” We must stand united in supporting Afghan women, demanding that world leaders stop turning a blind eye and take actionable steps. Educating girls and allowing women to work should be a universal right, not a privilege for a few. Let's amplify this message and call on international leaders to recognize and condemn this gender apartheid. It’s time to act, not just speak. #StandWithAfghanWomen #GenderApartheid #HumanRights #WomensRights

🌍 Stand Against Gender Apartheid in Afghanistan: Sign the Petition!✊ Since August 2021, women and girls in Afghanistan have faced gender discrimination under the Taliban regime. They are deprived of basic human rights, their voices are silenced and their freedoms are at risk. Those who dare to protest face insults, torture, arrests, and are often brutally killed. This systemic oppression constitutes Gender Apartheid, a Crime Against Humanity that must be recognized and addressed. Hence, the United Nations will finalize the drafting of the new Treaty on Crimes Against Humanity in October 2024. Politics4Her will call on the UN to explicitly include Gender Apartheid in this treaty. I encourage you all to support the cause and sign the petition. Your voice can make a difference. 🔗 https://chng.it/wsHYZxTPzQ #HumanRights #GenderEquality #StandWithAfghanWomen #EndGenderApartheid #UN #CrimesAgainstHumanity #Petition

The UN Special Rapporteur’s annual report on human rights in Afghanistan lays bare the alarming phenomenon of an institutionalized system of discrimination, segregation, disrespect for human dignity and exclusion of women and girls. In the new report, Richard Bennett, the UN’s Special Rapporteur, provides an intersectional analysis of the establishment and enforcement of this institutionalized system of unparalleled gender oppression. It paints a picture of a worsening situation for women and girls. https://lnkd.in/dswjMcEB

Over 80 decrees have been issued against Afghan women and girls, denying them the ability to: ☑️ speak in public ☑️ receive education after the age of 12 ☑️ work in government offices ☑️ go to parks As the Taliban enforces repressive and patriarchal rules, Afghan women continue to resist despite the threat of arrest, torture, and sexual violence. Afghan organizers are calling on the international community to recognize their experiences for what it is: gender apartheid. Afghan women and girls have a long history of resilience in the fight for gender justice. Through our work with our partners, we amplify their voices and report how the Taliban's actions amount to gender persecution. In one of our recent publications, we profile Afghan women organizers who tell their stories of resistance and share their visions for the future. "If the international community does nothing else to secure the rights of Afghan women, it should at least recognize this gender apartheid in Afghanistan." Since the Taliban's return to power in August 2021, the situation for women in Afghanistan has deteriorated drastically. The rights and freedoms that Afghanistani women fought so hard for were systematically stripped away. From denied access to Education, being excluded from most areas of the workforce, and mandatory dressing requirements - women's voices are being forcibly silenced and erased. Associazione di Solidarietà Donne per le Donne (ASDD) and Politics4Her are organising an Advocacy campaign. We have launched a petition to urge the United Nations to recognise Gender Apartheid in Afghanistan as a crime against humanity. What can you do? - Sign and share this petition within your network: https://lnkd.in/dC5rHXVb - Share this post to raise awareness. - Support women-led organisations working with Afghanistani women. - Engage with local leaders and policymakers to ensure women's rights remain a priority. #Afghanistan #WomensRights #HumanRights #EndGenderApartheid

Women in Afghanistan are currently living in a situation of institutionalized gender oppression, segregation, and impunity for gendered violence, a situation that has come to be known as “gender apartheid.” Since their takeover of Afghanistan in August 2021, the Taliban have engaged in a multi-level power game to strengthen their grip on the state of Afghanistan by restricting every aspect of women’s lives. #AfghanWomen #GenderOppression #GenderViolence https://lnkd.in/gab77k7R
