Ditching GPS for terrain fingerprints 🌍🖐️ #AdvancedNavigation has signed an MoU with MBDA to co-develop an inertial navigation system integrating their breakthrough NILEQ technology. Just like matching fingerprints, NILEQ's technology—based on neuromorphic sensors—scans the changing terrain as an airborne system flies across it, and matches it to an existing database of the Earth’s surface. Once a match is locked, the positioning data is fed into the navigation system. This will enable drones and airborne vehicles to navigate unlimited distances over land—completely independent of GPS. 🌎 From enabling safer #BVLOS drone operations in cities, agriculture and infrastructure inspections, to supporting search and rescue, mining, and more—this dual-use technology will change the way we navigate the world. It’s always a thrill to translate novel, complex research and technology into meaningful practical applications for both commercial and defence sectors. Thank you Edd Gent for covering our story, read more about the technology in IEEE Spectrum. https://lnkd.in/gyDg5aya

Drone Spoofing 🚁 🕹️ What is spoofing? It's a form of signal deception where a legitimate GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) signal is replaced with a fake one, providing incorrect position information. Unlike jamming, where the signal is blocked, spoofing tricks the receiver into thinking it is still receiving accurate data, leaving the user unaware of the false position. Besides, multi-constellation spoofers are emerging, capable of falsifying position information across all GNSS signals. 🔹 Can spoofing be detected? Detection is highly challenging. Unlike jamming, which is easily noticed, spoofed signals mimic legitimate ones, making discrimination difficult. 🔹 Is there a solution to mitigate spoofing? The best approach is to cross-verify GNSS positions with another navigation method, such as Inertial Navigation Systems (INS). However, it is crucial not to automatically integrate INS with GNSS to prevent corruption of navigation data. The Limits of Spoofing: 🔸 Complexity: Spoofing is technically complex, especially when attempting to deceive multiple GNSS constellations simultaneously. This requires sophisticated equipment and precise synchronization, making it a challenging task for potential attackers. 🔸 Ineffectiveness Against Encrypted Signals: Spoofing fails against encrypted GNSS signals, such as those used by the military GPS (reserved for NATO members). These signals include security features that make them highly resistant to spoofing attempts. Spoofing is developing, but electromagnetic jamming remains the most effective and efficient solution against the threat of drones and swarms.🛡️ 📡 Discover more about our anti-drone solutions: www.cerbair.com #DroneSecurity #Spoofing #AntiDrone #GNSS #CERBAIR

Here is an innovative use case of leveraging public 5G (gasp, not private) to deploy a 300-drone network in Switzerland for emergency services. Some use cases could be capturing images and diagnostics about emergency sites, delivering medical supplies faster or in remote areas, supporting search and rescue missions, or providing real-time situational awareness. I imagine a future where these drone networks can be used not only once an incident occurs but possibly to detect disasters before they happen - imagine drones equipped with thermal cameras that can detect a wildfire before it happens or the ability to analyze changes in soil and water levels to predict landslides or floods before they happen. There is a lot of opportunity here to scale and expand the use cases; it's neat to see. #5G #PublicSafety
