First Sprint NPS - 67% Second Sprint NPS - 93% In the education business, we measure two metrics to assess the quality of the course content and the educator. - Session level NPS - Session level Enrolment to session attendee ratio I only have one data point for the second metric. It is ~90% as of now. All the metrics look good until now. Let's see how they trend for the remaining three sprints of the App Marketing Mastery course. I am enjoying it. 🦉 Why the owl on Duolingo icon is sick? The latest icon change by Duolingo definitely got people talking, but did you know they’ve been running similar tests for the past two years? Every four months, Duolingo rolls out these changes for about two weeks – a strategy that seems to work well for them. What do they get from it? 🔵 More redownloads: Changing the owl's appearance grabs attention. Users still recognize Duolingo, but the change sparks curiosity, making them want to redownload the app. 🔵 Better retention: A fresh icon signals that something new might be inside the app. This draws users back, encouraging them to open the app more often. I wanted to find out which Duolingo icons caught users' attention the most and which ones could have the biggest impact on the product. So, I turned to Google Trends for answers. Turns out, the less "cute" icons stirred up the most excitement from the audience! While organizing my phone, I tried to uninstall Duolingo and was surprised by a humorous pop-up from Duo, their mascot. It reminded me of the app’s benefits and made me reconsider my decision. This clever tactic is a brilliant example of using creativity to retain users. In an age of high uninstall rates, such strategies can make a big difference. Most good apps have lots of competitors. While it’s tempting to monitor your competitors’ moves and strategies, the key to sustainable growth lies in addressing your customers’ feedback. This is what I mean by minding your own business. YOUR COMPETITORS ARE NOT YOUR CUSTOMERS. While competitors can offer some inspiration, remember that each app serves a unique audience with distinct needs. Take language learning apps as an example. Some focus on gamified experiences, others offer structured grammar courses; some are ideal for beginners, others cater to advanced learners, some are free, others very expensive. The best insights for driving your app's growth come not from trying to match competitors, but from listening to your users. CUSTOMER FEEDBACK IS ACTIONABLE. Monitoring competitors often leads to vague insights and speculation about why they made certain choices. In contrast, customer feedback is direct and specific—a goldmine for identifying what to improve. Whether through reviews, surveys, or user interviews, your customers will tell you exactly what they want. This makes it easier to prioritize product improvements and app updates. When users see that their feedback is being addressed, they’re more likely to stay, trust, and advocate for your app. So, mind your own business and listen to your users.
